How do you handle the casual Rockets fan around you?

Had to get yalls opinion about it....

Probably the most I get out of this is at work. Yea, Mig and Omega works with me but the others. There are a few that know their stuff, and the others? Not so bright.

For example, on Sunday, someone behind me was all talking about the Celtics/Raptors game saying that TJ Ford and Ray Allen "lit it up". Then proceeds to email some people on our team at work of a pic with Hakeem/Yao in which he talks about it like its recent news, and says he's the biggest Rockets fan.

Fast forward to yesterday, "who's this Scola guy?", "why did the Rockets trade Juwan Howard to the Mavs?"

In my head im like "R U SERIOUS?", its like you act like you're a fan, know what team you are rooting for and bust out with those comments, I sometimes feel I have to go up to them and slap them for calling them self a fan.

Anyways, I guess I just had to rant but irks me for the posers that are out there. I admit, I watch the Astros/Texans/Dynamo, but don't know a lick about them and would suggest to avoid me for having a casual conversation pertaining them. I can name players on the team, players that used to play for them, and follow them throughout the season, know if they are having a winning/losing record, but live and die Rockets. I would literally talk Rockets for hours and never get bored.

    What's your take?

I find it harder to find someone to talk Astros about.

You can kind of fake knowing basketball, or maybe even football.

Baseball though...just give it up. :p

Why did we trade Juwan to Dallas and who's this Scola guy? For serious.

I'm a MUCH bigger Rocket fan than pretty much anyone I know except my Dad. Most of my friends are casual fans, but are major Astro fans. I'm the opposite.

The guys I work with talk about the Rockets, but they get all their info from fantasy sports. They know I'm a super-fan, so they try to talk Rockets with me, but I can see right through them and know they really don't know much about the team except for fantasy stats. I just try to change the subject because I don't like being patronized.

Does that make me an *******? At least I'm nice about it.

I mention something about Battier or Hayes. If their eyes don't light up, I know that they don't watch many games and keep the conversation very superficial.

I try to only socialize with rockets fans.

If someone is trying to act like they know something about sports I usually just whip out a couple snippets of uber-knowledge and/or name drop a couple old school players and watch them turn oblivious.

Let me pose a similar question:

What would you do if your best friend (technically, your best friend's husband) scored tickets to last night's game, and didn't even know/bother to look up who they were playing?

    I just about disowned her.

My wife isn't a Rockets fan by any stretch of the imagination, but she likes to go to the games. I got tickets to the Suns game on the 19th. Here's the conversation we had last night.

wife: Who are we going to see again?
    me: The Phoenix Suns
    wife: The Suns?
me: Yeah, the team with Steve Nash
wife: Oh, Steve Nash! He's cute!

here's the conversation we had last night...

me : So did you act oblivious again when he mentioned basketball?
a-train's wife : yeah, he bought it, I don't think he'll be asking me to go to anymore games. Its safe to say you can come over during rockets games.
    me : excellent.

    :p

Yesterday afternoon I went to PAPPA's on Pierce, and this dude with a Rockets' jersey (I believe it was Yao's 11) got off his car, and I put my window down and said: "7:30, man... you ready!?!?!" So he answered: "That's right...! Tonight, boy! We're tearing it down!"

I wonder if that dude posts here :D . I hope he wasn't just "wearing" the colors just 'cuz he was going to the game. I hate it when regular people (unlike us) wear Rockets' gear and don't know wtf is going on with our team. Ask them to name 4 players, and they can only say "Yao and TMac"... sure, 'cuz they're on the billboards .

Holy, cow, meggo, I think I'd go BALLISTIC over that b*tch. Don't you post some Rockets' posters up on your cubicle so that they know not to diss your Rockets in front of you?!? I do.

Yeah, Steve Nash is cute, alright. I think we're married to the same chick, A-Train.

Yeah, I need to get on that. I've got the schedule on my calendar, but I don't have posters up yet.

I just listen to them and laugh. Its amazing when someone who doesn't know crap about the Rockets talks to someone who knows even less, and tehy take advantage of that time to "show off" the little knowledge they have.
