Got a call from my bank today, asked me a few transactions, and after that they told me they think someone duplicated my credit card and used it for gas and other purpose, but my credit card is sitting in my wallet..I keep all my monthly bills too. These criminals nowdays r just so tech-advanced..
You just got "connor'd", sir. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCoOfBfSz0Q I mean, dang, that sucks. Just tell the truth, prove that you still have your card and it wasn't you, like you're telling us, and everything will work out.
i am not sure where they get the machines but the magnetic stripe on the back of your card has all the information if they are able to get your card off of old records/transactions they can put that info on a magnetic stripe and use it that way. gas makes sense since there is no one to check the card and it can be just swiped in and all you would need to know is the zip code...considering that they were able to get the card info they probably were able to get your billing zip code too. otherwise they would have to fake an actual visa/mc/amex front and back if used at a store and most clerk can spot fake cards otherwise its just a blank cc card piece of plastic with the magnetic strip on the back...when i was working for circuit city back in college the LP manager showed us some of the fakes he had collected in the past and a few were like that.

When you give your credit card to anyone, make sure you watch him/her. They should never have to swipe your card twice. At restraunts, make sure you ask the waiter what their name is and try to remember it. This will make them hesitent to screw with your card. You don't have to worry if it's a place like iHop where you pay at the front. What irks me is some gas pumps don't even require a zip code. Maybe they have really good cameras to make up for it.
Sometimes you do have to swipe the card twice. And yes, gas station pumps do ask for your zip code. And you shouldn't have to ask for the waiter's name. They tell you when they greet you and it's on the receipt.
what uprising put. I read on another thread in another forum, where he got his card info stolen also. Turns out there was a guy who put a fake scanner on top of the real scanner at the gas station. He gets your info when you scan your card. The gas pump still reads your card, so you won't notice anything. The cop told him always to move the scanner to ensure it's the real one, the fake one would budge and comes off. But the guy with the fake scanner was in a van nearby with a computer and recording all the information.
ryan, if you work somewhere as a cashier or something similar you should know how to swipe a card. If you see someone swipe your card twice it is an automatic red flag if you can't see both swipes. Some gas station pumps do not as for zip codes. The majority, however, do. And always make sure you get the waiters name in case this happens to you. Sometimes it may slip their mind. The point is, make sure you remember it. If the credit card company asks you if you've visited any restraunts recently you will be able to provide both the name of the place and the waiter's name.
Wow that's pretty scary. Thank goodness I pay cash for the majority of the time. besides, i don't really have a credit card and my debit card never has enough money
It's real easy to do so I wouldn't worry too much other than being vigilant in reading your monthly bill. But a waiter could just have a hand-held one and scan it (saved to flash memory) right before he did yours. Or like others have said, it could be at the gas station. Nowadays they're high tech and have mobile phone connections that phone the information back. They don't even have to be close by.
I had 2 out of state BS charges on my card earlier this year with my CC still with me. One was for TimeWarner, which I don't have and the other was for Airtran. Big freakin hassle. Called one of the 4 credit report agencies to put a freeze on my credit. Of course, cancelled my card too.
