I was reading a thread last night and a poster was talking about all the bandwagon Lakers fans and fairweather Rockets fans. Its impossible to disagree on that point, especially at this point in the season, but he also said you can't be a "die-hard" fan if you don't live in your favorite teams state. BS. I spent my childhood in Kentucky and played with Rockets on Tecmo NBA Basketball on Nintendo (anyone remember that classic?!) Hakeem was impossible to stop and blocked damn never everything. Then I can remember watching them in the '94 Finals against the Knicks at 13 years old when I first started watching basketball (nationally televised game of course). Been a fan ever since. How did you become a fan?
Grew up in H-town, and as a kid I remember my dad getting so mad at them in the 80's and wondering how he could get so worked up about something on TV. Moved to OKC in 1990, started watching any games I could with my dad that were nationally televised, and I also got to meet Hakeem in 93. That pretty much sealed the deal right there. Plus this stupid annoying kid in 8th grade who was a sonics fan. He always talked smack about the rockets and I shoved it in his face when they won in 94.
I had relatives living in Houston and watched a few games while the Rockets' telecasts showed up on the Rio Grande Valley and I could see them still living in Mexico back in the Jim Peterson days. I remember seeing young '80s players in tight shorts and tight jerseys, and it was a riot. I used to think: "I thought Americans were all white!" because most of the players were black. I became a HARD-CORE fan when I arrived to these United States of America in late '86 and have been one since. I believe AKEEM OLAJUWON is the greatest player of any sport in the entire creation of the cosmos.
Watching Calvin Murphy and Rudy T light it up when I was a kid. This was pre-Moses, and kind of a grim time in terms of success for the franchise, but I was hooked for life.
Moved to Houston in 1980 when I was 5. My dad took us to a few Phi Slamma Jamma games. Didn't really follow the Rockets until Akeem was drafted. I was completely hooked after the 1986 season...the same year I got hooked on the Astros.
My Dad was a huge fan of all things Houston when I was little. Olajuwon was so spectacular and watching them in the finals as a 8 - 9 year old. I spent countless days during the summer watching Hakeem the Dream, Clutch City, & Double Clutch. Without players like Hakeem or Bagwell & Biggio with the Astros, I doubt I would be a Houston fan at all. Now I'm a huge Astros & Rockets fan, and am in the process of converting my wife into a basketball fan and she has switched from the Cards to the Stros.
I started playing basketbal in High school, because my brother and his friends played it. I really enjoyed it, so i started to get interested in the NBA. Since I played center and had some good footwork for a big man I immediatly loved to see Hakeem play. And tried to see as many games of Hakeem as possible to improve my own post moves. That is how I Became a Rocket Fan.
No. I was a big UH fan during the Hayes era as well. That 71-69 game was one of the highlights of my young life.
Born and Raised in Houston, Family (Dad and Cousins) watched the Rockets from the 80's onwards.. I grew into to it.
