Today, I passed a woman at the corner of I 10 and Washington in the rain with a dog holding a sign asking for help. I took her a blanket, some gloves, a dog bone and a couple of tarps to stay dry but, when I went, every car that came by drove past and didn't even look.

Many of them were in Mercedes, BMW's, Lexus' and big freakin' SUV's. They pretended that this struggling human being didn't exist the DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!!

How can we ever allow this to happen? If the measure of a society is how we treat those most in need, our society is failing badly. I drove home crying for her and for how sad it is that we all seem to ignore the very people that need help the most.

If there is truly any justice in this world, people like her and her dog will never be want for anything.

You know what? I was going to respond with a long rant venting on that obviously sarcastic question, but it's Christmas and pardoning people is the tradition this time of year. So, Merry Christmas.

Another tradition is feeling like you're part of the sainted solution but never the problem. Merry Christmas to you too.

Bah humbug to anyone driving a nice car near I-10 and Washington, though.

Of course not, you ass, but at least it's something. A lot of people wouldn't even cast a glance her way. I'm sure she was glad to receive even such small gifts as a blanket and a treat for her dog.

fadeaway: Thanks for having my back on this but BK can't resist being a smug little ****.

BK: We're all part of the problem! You think I don't know that? But, my concern is that the problem exists at all and so many people who ignore it have the means to do something and choose not to. Holier than thou bull**** won't fix the problem either, but I guess you would know.

You know, I wasn't going to post this, but **** it. Why the hell not!

    So is she helped now?

BK: For the moment. If your folks have a spare bedroom and an extra seat at the dinner table though, I'm sure she'd be willing to come out to Kingwood for Christmas. Maybe your dad could get her a job. Interested?

If that sounds like too much, maybe you could just drop by her corner and give her a speech on what a waste social welfare is and how, with the right skills, she too could be qualified for a job in either the food services or janitorial industries. Acutally, some coffee and a cup of soup would be better but that might get your hands dirty.

If that is too difficult, maybe you could just post on the BBS about all the moral evils of our country like deviant sexual practices and lying about them. But that wouldn't feed anything except your ego and, by the sound of it, you've already had your fill.

Instead, why don't you just open your heart for a moment and recognize the suffering in the world instead of trying to defend people who don't need defending. Maybe then, you'll stop crying about taxes and speed limits long enough to realize that there is more to life than your precious bank account, though I'm sure the thought of it keeps you warm at night.

I admire your concern for those less fortunate than you Jeff.

Our society is one based upon personal success in life. People generally dont care about the less fortunate because helping them will not serve to advance themselves. Usually, when people do give aid, it is because of moral guilt. I dont think this is a sign of a failure of society, but simply an indication of where our societal values lie. In the individual self, and not the collective.

Also, ive come to understand that most homeless choose to be. It is simply easier or more acceptable to them to live in a homeless shelter and beg for a living than to acquire a job that is difficult and menial. This, in my opinion, is a true indication of a failure of society.

Merry Christmas. Go Sox. In that order.

The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?

Or saving the Rockets? Does having the Rockets in Houston for 20 or so more years keep you warm at night?

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or whatever. It sounds to me that you are insulting those jobs. If so what's wrong with working as a janitor or fastfood worker?

I have a question, How can she be homeless?
If it's just her and her dog. She can't go to a McDonalds and get a job? If she speaks english she should be able to.

Jeff, I'm not trying to be an ass about it, but your remarks just got me mad

Jeff my respect for you grows everyday. I admit our society is fu%ked up. I'm not exactly the second coming of Mother Teresa, but I try to help out the needy. I don't nearly do enough but....

One thing that pisses me off about homeless people are their smoking habits. Not all of them smoke of course, but nothing grosses me out as much as a person begging while smoking. Why the hell would I give any money to a person smoking?!?! The money I give them should be used for food, not to support their filty habits. I also think it is much better when they can at least get a job selling newspapers at the intersections. It shows me they are at least trying.

And Jeff, you make it sound like all people driving "Mercedes, BMW's, Lexus' and big freakin' SUV's" are bad people. I might happen to drive one of those cars and I try to help out. Though I might not be able to give them my time, I try to help them in other ways. I'm just tired of people blaming the problems of homelessnes on to the upper class.

And FrancisFan its not exactly easy for a homeless person to get a job. Even McDonalds requires a "home telephone number". Thus no number, no J.O.B. You are right about some people of course. There are probably a number of homeless people who just prefer the ease of begging then the hardships of labor.

I hope you told here to check into the Y. Also, George R Brown, I think, does an Xmas dinner for the homeless. I'm sure about Thanksgiving, but not sure about this. Something to verify though.

    Jeff,
Capitalism teaches us. . . she is there because
of her own personal failure. Than The rich
are rich because they work hard yadda yadda
    yadda.

Those in the BMW etc feel she is where she
belongs because she either lazy, stupid or
    something like that.

People actually beleive one can Bootstrap
their way out of what ever

I do not know her story [do you? I'm curious]
But I am weary of the street begger. I don't
    like throwing away money.

If we want to solve this problem we have to
    release our selfish, smug attitude.

If you say . . .EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE BASICS
we should never look at another person as
LAZY or UNDESERVING and that is HARD TO DO

When you world digging a ditch 8 hours a day
the idea that someone can do nothing and still
have only slightly less than you makes you
    wonder. . . WHY THE F*CK AM I WORKING?

In America the idea is. .. If you don't work
    [not matter the reason]
    You should not eat . . .

After a person's name. . .the next questions
[or not long after is ] WHAT DO YOU DO?

    Rocket River
Americans are defined by their work
and if you don't work . . .you lack
    definition to the system

while I beleive everyone should have the
basics. . . I also beleive everyone should
    contribute.

I saw them, and it wasn't Tipper Gore & Buddy. It was Dan Quayle's former wife with the lover she left him for!
