Hi, I have one of those ugly fluorescant light panels on the ceiling of my kitchen, it looks exactly like the one in this picture below...

    http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...ge=1&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:20,s:0&tx=66&ty=105

I want to take this out and put track lighting in since track lighting would be an easier install than recess lights.

I can't really figure out how to take this ugly thing down though, I removed the little plastic panel that sheidls the bulbs, taking the bulbs out should be pretty easy, i just can't find any screws or anything that fix the fixture to the ceiling.

Anyone know how to do this or knows of a website that shows instructions specifically on taking down the fixture? (don't care about taking out light bulbs that's easy, alot of sites only show how to replace the bulbs)

Most ceiling light fixtures are help up by bolt and some variety of cap nuts that were screwed into an electrical box. Perhaps the white trim snaps off and there are clips holding it up on the ceiling. If you need to google how to do this, I would recommend you not proceeding as you will need to rewire the new fixture. Probably a good idea to ask an uncle or someone handy to do this.

I am betting you hope to remove the entire light and wood box framing the light. Perhaps to replace with recessed (pot) lighting or some more modern handing lights. We hope to do this as well.

One thing to keep in mind... once you remove the framing around the light you will almost assuredly need to do new sheetrock up there. I have a friend who removed and then just tried to patch and paint, and the ghost of lights past are always very visible. When it comes time for us to do it we will hire someone to do the sheetrocking.

I am guessing that the plastic cover comes off and on. It should be flexible on the sides. You should be able to push in on the sides and then pull it out.

Funny, I removed my track lighting and put up a flourescent panel like that one, except a bit more decorative. My track lighting used little halogen bulbs that were putting me in the poorhouse. They'd burn out way too quickly and cost too much to replace, considering what they are. The fixtures looked good, but the bulbs were killing me. I've been so happy with the floresecent lights. The fixture looks pretty good, gives great light, the bulbs last forever and are inexpensive to replace.

I may go ahead and get an electrican to do this, he quoted me $100 per recess light if I wanted to do this (includes labor and material)
and if i got a track light system, $100 to install. Sound about right?
