In the January 12, 2005 article about Bob Sura, there was a discussion about how bad his knee is and how much pain he is playing through. From what I've heard this is a BIG concern within the Rockets organization. Additionally there have been rumors (though in the past) that the Rockets are going to try and aquire Eric Snow. Do you guys think that this may be done if it is clear that Sura has to undergo surgury? Do the Rockets attempt to buy time with there current point guard line up with Barry and then perhaps Barret and maybe even Ward, when he comes back, playing the point or trade for snow?

I personally think Snow is similar to Sura. He is a hard nosed player that overall plays intelligently but isn't a great shooter. He definitely lacks Sura's athletism though. I'd definitely be all for a Snow trade if his contract was not soo long (why do teams over old players outrageous contracts?).

So do the Rockets trade (probably one of there pfs) for Snow? Do you guys think this is a likely situation and if so is it a smart move?

Eric Snow's contract is too big and too long. He is a slower version of Sura. Has no 3 point range and is slower on defense than he was a few yrs ago. No way the Rockets trade should trade for him. would not be a smart trade. I would love to get daniels for seattle but taht wont happen now since seattle is doing so well.

I know what you mean about Daniels Franchise... the Rockets could of done a better job in the off season of getting a point guard but talking about that has gone on WAY TOO MUCH on this board... how bad is sura's knee and will it require surgury and if so who do we get if not snow?

Sura is definitely better than Snow. That string of triple doubles last year was very impressive and not many point guards even on a crappy team like the Hawks could come close to doing that. Sura is not a great scorer or shooter, but he is very good and rebounding and penetration. Snow doesn't make many mistakes but he's not particularly good at anything at this point in his career. he seems to have lost a step or two since his days in Philly.

I just want to make it clear that I think Bob Sura is way better then Eric Snow. I'm just concerned with his injury and what the Rockets will do if he goes down.

I do not mean it negative , but I doubt the Rockets do much-other than play these older shooting combo guards at the point. I agree Snow is too old and slow at this point in his career- would be similat to M Jackson at the point last season - very efficient, but slow...

There are not that many true point guards out there. There have been rumors about Arroyo?? If a deal has not already been made he would fit well, or Hinrich, but we have little to trde with other than the trade exception...

I would love to have a true point guard...

The point of the Thread is valid. The Rox have been going as well as Sura plays. Good game? Probably a W. Bad game? probably an L.

No, Sura is not a great player but he is making the team greater because of him.

But will his knee 'last' the month? It doesn't appear destined to last the season.

Available '1's? Probably Murray from Seattle (rotation and locker room frustration issues there, I understand). Snow, of course, but of course his contract is silly. Troy Hudson? Why? He's bombing in Minny.

I'd like to see Derek Anderson. For Mo. Same contracts (IIRC). DA is a 2/3 with handles. And a mother in rehab in Houston. SAR was lost to Portland. Maybe a win-win deal for players nobody overly wants or needs?

Sura's knee has been a big concern for me ever since it was reported to be injured. Our team suddenly gets a LOT worse without Sura in the rotation.

Without him, we have Charlie "Stick a Fork in Me" Ward and NBDL All-Star Barret manning the point. That's not going to cut it, especially if we manage to scrape into the playoffs.

On the other hand, look at our trade assets: Wesley, Barry and draft picks. I'm not even going to discuss Taylor. Getting rid of one of the first three is going to be a real tough decision for the Rockets, especially since while we could have Wesley and Barry play some point, we have no small forwards.

Bottom line: We're going to see just how tough Sura really is. Ouch.

Who are the leading point guards or combo guards in the minor leaugues. We had some success going that route in the past.

Old point guards would be welcome with 10 day contracts. Speaking of old point guards and contracts, is Matt Maloney available still playing.

if sura goes down we are in trouble.

we don't really need to trade for a 1. we can trade for a 3 and make a line-up of:

    yao
    Jho
    trade
    tmac
    wesley

one of our PF's needs to go for a 3. if we do trade for a PG where does that leave AB when sura gets back? barrett deserves to be the backup PG.

Read this over at Yahoo! Sports and didn't see it posted so here goes(EDIT: I guess the original article was posted after further investigation but maybe not the fanball take):

Rockets: Sura's knee injury isn't minor

    by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
    Wednesday, January 12, 2005

    News
Rockets point guard Bobby Sura had his bruised right knee drained on Tuesday, according to the Houston Chronicle, the second time he has been forced to do so since sustaining the injury on December 18. Sura has played through it in 11 games since, averaging almost 33 minutes per game, but he sat out the entire second half of Sunday's game and has not ruled out surgery. "As far as his injury, it's not something minor," coach Jeff Van Gundy told the Houston Chronicle. "Very, very few other guys in this league would still be playing right now."

    Views
Sura and the Rockets had previously downplayed the injury, but its severity explains the inconsistency we've seen from Bobby in the last month. Houston has very few options at point guard right now, so Sura will likely continue to gut this out, but the roller coaster numbers will continue until he has an opportunity to recover.

I don't think the Rox are going to leverage their future for a quick fix in Snow just for this season. Management understands that we aint going anywhere significant this season anyways.

The way to do this is to wait until the offseason and allow things to shake out, and see what we can swing.

My pipe dream is that Sacramento has a serious meltdown in the playoffs, gets ousted in the 1st round, decide to rebuild, and trade Mike Bibby to the Rox for MoT, filler and draft picks. Then the Rox unload JHoward and more picks for a disgruntled Stromile Swift. Then we sign Bobby Simmons for a modest contract to fill out our roster

    Pipe Dream Starting Lineup:
    PG- Bibby
    SG- Simmons
    SF- Tmac
    PF- Swift
    C- Yao

I am not so certain of that (nice pipe dreams, BTW -- and what are you smoking in that pipe?).

I agree -- I hope we don't mortgage our future for a long-term contract on an older point guard.

Old guys are fine if there contracts are short (Motumbo).

If we can position ourselves to get out from under some ugly contracts in 2-3 years we can be in a position to contend

If Sura goes down, I'd expect us to go to Wesley and even Barry, before we'd get Snow. Please, say no to Snow. Based on how the Rockets operated this past summer, I doubt they'd pick up his contract.

But, we really need to pick up a good point guard. I think we were foolish not to make a stronger effort to get Damon Jones, Brent Barry and Chris Duhon or Antonio Daniels in the off-season. Now that his brother is here, and Brent hasn't done so well, we might be able to pry him from SA, which could make a big difference.

By the way, why didn't we pick up Bo Outlaw when he went on waivers?

In the off-season, I hope we find a way to get a draft pick to pick up Deron Williams or John Gilchrist.

Fat chance we'll get that trade of Howard for Chandler and Duhon, now that Duhon is playing so well, and Howard isn't. Rats!

Why aren't Taylor and Howard playing better for us this year? I don't understand! We need them to play better, so we can get something for them in trade.

    :)

I'm quite scared about the sura situation. If we bring in another PG (i hope it would not be Snow) , expect us to buyout Ward's contract. What's more alarming is that we're not having the opportunity to upgrade our PF slot and always looking for solutions to our backcourt...

why can't we just give sura less minutes?

it won't make his knee better but it will help it from getting any worse.

As already suggested, the team would be just as well served to go out and get either a tall 2 or legit 3 as they would to get another small PG or combo 1/2 guard if Sura is out with surgery.
