They have Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, and Trevor Ariza. Even Harden is a decent rebounder for a SG. There is no reason why they should be so bad rebounding the ball.
Josh Smith and TJ suck at rebounding. One or both HAVE to go this offseason. Need to trade TJ for something.
We have this dude in a suit on our sidelines named Donatas Motiejunas. He's a pretty damn good PF. And he's pretty good at boxing out so someone else on our team can get a rebound.
I wonder this as well. I also wonder what the metrics say about a PF who can't rebound, is a terrible FT shooter, and has questionable shot selection.
Smith and Jones dont do anything You see Howard trying to boxout/contest/rebound while both those dudes stand still
And these are two HUGE things. Two things that really hurt the Rockets... not rebounding and not getting back on defense. It seems like a coach should be able to get his team to do these basic things. It's just effort.
When Howard comes out to contest, somebody else has to get the board, and that's almost always the opposing team. Even when he's not contesting, he can't get them all, team needs to box out. Another big thing is the team leaks out for the fast break a lot because this is a transition team, and that of course leads to offensive boards.
Because we try to run after every missed shot and that leaves Howard and one of our PFs left to rebound. So basically, that leaves Howard there to rebound against the other team trying to get an offensive rebound. On offensive we take to many 3s and it leads long rebounds. Plus, we are missing Dmo. Man we could have used him this series.
Or more to the point, guard and even small forward rebounding is nice, but overrated. I don't really care if my SG gets zero rebounds a game. That's not priority one or two or three ... I definitely care about this for my bigs. And the Rockets have only one above average rebounding big. Solution: Kevin Love. Not a great defender. But is a great rebounder. And rebounding is part of the game.
