    Where to begin....

Give us the definition for deficit and maybe we'll tell you.

LMAO obama comparing us to deadbeats not paying their car note.

guess that's a good way to get the average dem voter to grasp the debt ceiling

of course he said it will cost us NO MONEY which is untrue

Deficit in 2013 was much lower than that of 2012, but both years were higher than average (in absolute dollars and in % of GDP). It's not surprising that the deficit went up from the recession nor that it's going down with a recovery. It should also not be a surprise in the near future when it goes up again (assuming the Feds do nothing about it, which is their MO) as baby-boomers start hitting social security and medicare hard.

You can see a graph in this document, including the brief respite when Clinton actually had a surplus before Bush pissed it all away: http://cbo.gov/sites/default/files/cbofiles/attachments/44172-Baseline2.pdf

Anyway, reduction in the deficit is good as a sign of recovery. I don't think it's particularly notable as far as Obama's job performance for the better or the worse. We do need to stop the climb of healthcare costs to soften the blow of the aging baby-boomers.

    THANK you.

No politician talks about this. It's a national joke. It's like they won't offend the hospital lobbyists.

When my wife had emergency (is there another kind?) appendectomy, the total bill---hospital stay (one day), surgery, emergency clinic (because before the hospital we didn't know what it was, and they ran tests and whatnot)---would have added up to, what?, nearly 40 f***ing thousand dollars. Thank God we have insurance, but even then, it was a bite.

I mean, just horrific. Looking at the itemized bill afterward you just want to puke.

Roxtxia you're missing the whole point of why healthcare costs so much.

I had this discussion with a family friend who developed a major tool for cardiac surgery. The process of development cost over $50M dollars in the 1990's of which the bulk of the money came in the form of private equity from Merck who took a large chunk of ownership of course. Anyways, that $50-60M they invested to help him develop his tool they must recoup.

The bulk of innovation in medical devices is here in the US, it's not in canada and it's not in europe, so if Americans want to continue to have the newest and best equipment we must constantly invest more and more into R and D which we do and which is why when the richest foreigners get sick they come here! We have all the best of the best when it comes to technology

The cost of healthcare is because of the investment involved from the cost of schooling to the cost of actually developing the medical tools. Do I think it's alot sure? But what is the cost of your wife dying was my family friends response? It's alot more so that $40,000 was an opportunity cost to make sure she was alive. It sucks, but innovation is expensive, then factor in all the poor people who run to the ER and don't pay and then good people like yourself must pay for it through your ER experience

What is crazy is how costs of different procedures seem totally random from hospital to hospital. like over double and triple one place to the next in the same city.

Though I can't always keep the discipline, my philosophy is you can make any thread into a good conversation if you ignore the dumb stuff and talk intelligently on the subject.

Don't worry, death panels are almost here.

Well otis thorpe you get diagnosed with something major and tell me if you want to be at st lukes/methodist or some garbage hospital on 1960

I had a family friend die last year from a kidney infection and he wasn't a wealthy guy, my dad had the same infection 2 years ago and methodist cured him.

It's horrible but the better hospitals you get better care for you money, flat out.

They should force all the healthcare industry put the price of everything on a list, just like restaurant menus. So people could do comparison shopping. There is absolutely no good reason why the cost of a procedure to be different by more than 300% within the same city.

there is absolutely reason are you serious??? Your life is on the line do you want a harvard med school surgeon operating on you or some bumpkin who graduated from a no name school because he was a terrible student and couldn't get into a good med school

god democrats want us all to be the same, no freaking thank you. I can afford it, I have great insurance, I will gladly pay triple to have the good surgeon operate on me. They saved my dad's live and the poor family friend who my mom's known her whole life died from the same thing!!!!

Why not charge by how much you can pay? I mean if you want to live, you better be prepared to pay the rest of your life's earning. Why don't we follow countries like China that do not accept patients in the hospitals unless you pay first. If you cannot pay, you deserve to die.

that's called survival of the fittest.....and I agree with it. Why should we subsidize the procedure to keep you alive if you're not even capable of paying for it, lol so the taxpayer pay not only to keep you alive but clearly you're the type where we have to give you food stamps and other subsidies so you can just pay bills

hence why we're 17 trillion in debt and china has a surplus.....government is a business, ours is a joke

You should study history in the past and current events in middle east. See how the rich like it when the poor rise up.

you're a lucky guy otis thorpe. I still stick to methodist or st luke's when something major comes up, I want the best doctors with my life on the line thank you very much. Trust me if methodist or st luke's would take those doctors who worked on you at county those guys would run for the bigger potential pay day but the reality is the good hospitals can't take every joe schmo off the streets with a MD
