Both Free Agents. Melvin Ely (R), Charlotte Bobcats, 6-10, 261, F/C Reggie Evans, Denver Nuggets, 6-8, 245, PF Haven't signed with anyone yet. Evans will not bring as much offense as he'll bring rebounding and defense. My number 1 choice between these two is Ely. Ely has had a decent couple of years. I think he could be a spark off the bench as an energy guy, for a couple of years. Could be a starter after JHo is no longer on the team, or earlier. He is restricted and I do not know how much he is going to make. I think he could be a Stro type of player, but a better fit. Here is a link: http://www.nba.com/playerfile/melvin_ely/index.html
I don't understand why Ely hasn't signed yet. Maybe Charlotte is notoriously cheap; the Bobcats waited forever last year to pay Gerald Wallace. I always did imagine the Rockets trading with Charlotte. Probably a fantasy involving Charlotte's cap space and wanting to rid us of Juwan Howard (given the Bobcats' "fiscal responsibility", that seems unlikely). And Melvin Ely as part of a sign-and-trade: a solid backup 4/5, less potential than Mutombo, but 40 years younger.
The youth movement in Charlotte would negate any interest they would have in Juwan. I think they have the youngest average age in the league..... ? If not, probably in the top 3 youngest. I just don't see Juwan fitting in for many teams except LA. He would be able to patent his 15 foot jumper all day in the triangle. I do, however, like Ely.
Sign and trade would be the only way we could get it done? If so I would like to make it happen. These guys have an excess of C/PF's. They do not need him. I bet they could use a good back up point. Could we make a Rafer/Bowen for Ely trade? I don't know what he is planning on making, but Rafer/Bowen should be close to a done deal.
and then who is going to be our pg? rafer is more valuable to this tean than ely. NO to that trade if you ask me
No to any trades involving Rafer Alston. We already gave up Mike James for him (which I thought was a great trade and still do) so to trade him would make us look like the NY Knicks, and that's never a good thing. We have to give Alston another chance to play with Yao and TMac. He is a semi-version of the perfect PG for this time. He can get the ball to Yao and thats more important in my opinion than him hitting open jumpers. What good is a PG who can hit open jumpers if he can't get the ball yo Yao which leads to the open jumpers. We will do fine with Howard as long as our two superstars stay healthy and the others come along as the season goes on. ENOUGH WITH THE HOWARD HATING ALREADY!
S&T, use the Trade Exception and give Charlotte a 2nd rounder. That's all they paid for Ely. Done deal.
So we shouldn't hate on Juwan because we will still be good if EVERYBODY else on the team improves? Juwan is a huge problem for this team. It's not that people are hating on Juwan, they are just taking an objective look at him and the immensley negative impact he has on the team. Feel free to pretend that we will be fine with him on the team, it won't change the fact that we will at best be an average playoff team.
Either one is good for this team but it aint gonna happen thats why we are at the moment signing scrubs to our team
Mark it down, if Howard is playing 30 mpg this next season, we are mediocre at best. I don't hate Juwan. I hate Juwan on the floor with Yao. The combination of the two is TERRIBLE.
