assuming we start next season with the current roster, I think we should start Sura and James. they both have the ability to bring the ball up and we know T-Mac is the one running the offense. Sura can penetrate and create shots for his teamates, James is as good a shooter as Wesley if not better. Defensively James is much faster than Wesley so he can match up the oppent point guard and I think he can play lock-down type D against the point guards; Sura is usually one step slower than most starting PG in the league, at 6'5 I think he's better suited guarding the 2-guards. With Sura guarding PGs and Wesley guarding SGs we are disadvantaged in both speed and size. that's important because have James and Sura stay with their men and with the addition of a great weak-side shot blocker in Swift, I think Yao won't get into faul trouble so offen and if Yao can play more minutes that helps our offense too. we'd be much better than last season defensively, and Yao can contribute more minutes on the offensive end. I hope we can upgrade our backcourt via trades, but assuming we start next season with the current roster I think we should start James and Sura.

This isn't a horrible idea except for the fact that I think what JVG liked about Wesley playing so many minutes was his solid defense and quick passing ability.

I like James' game, but honestly passing is not his strong suit. Sura, on the other hand, I found to be a better passer than expected, but in creating for others, he takes his time.

Wesley, on the other hand, is the perfect SG in that if he doesn't immediately have a shot he swings the ball quickly. And his defense on 2 guards for someone his size is very impressive. If he can hit his outside shots more consistently, assuming there is no other moves made, I think he still starts with Sura, with James coming off the bench for a lot of minutes and Barry getting 10-15.

IMO, I like Mike "The Microwave" James off the bench.

For one, as Sura is our only other sort of proven point guard, we really have to split the 48 minutes of PG duties between them--starting both makes this tougher. Second, I think Mike James mentality is ideal for a 6th or 7th man where a guy of the bench is needed to be really aggresive.

Not that it is a bad idea, but no, I don't say start Sura and James. But I would not be against ending the games with them in the backcourt. That (assuming Tmac is playing the 3) is our best combination of size and athleticism, if they are knocking down their 3s they can be really tough.

We would probably lead the league in turnovers.

^ How do you figure? They combined for 3.4 TOs a game last season, that's nothing when you figure some players turn it over more a game by themselves.

But moving MJ to SG wouldn't be such a bad idea. He's got a great shot and was actually more consistent than Wesley down the stretch. He is no doubt our quickest player and he could be a nice running partner on fastbreaks.

I highly doubt JVG will replace Wesley with James.

In the regular season, you need a rock solid guy who executes and doesn't make mistakes. That is Wesley. That is why Wesley averaged more MPG than any Rocket except TMac. JVG trusts Wesley. Period.

Just thinking out loud here, but I just don't think James has very good court vision and is prone to cranking out dribblearama.Don't get me wrong,I love James's defense, ability to get to the hole, and pop the occasional three, but I too see him as more of a bench player.
On Sura...First off,he's really surprised me with his play when healthy.I do think Bobby lacks the athleticism we need out of our starter at the 2 though. When he plays within himself and under control,Bobby's a real asset. As a role player he's great, but when asked to force the issue that's when the turnovers and injuries start.
Both guys can be good rotation players on a contender, but I just don't see them as starter material here.

My take on the assist to turnover ratio is that oftentimes the ball is run through Tracy or Yao...and these guys convert or just plain make their teammates better.

Bingo, IF we keep our backcourt as is. Like someone else said, who finishes will depend on matchups and who is playing better that particular game. If Wesley can guard the opposing team's SG, his FT shooting and steady hand make him a solid closer.

    1. We traded Steve Franchise a year ago. I don't think we need a undersized sg that likes to dribble and not pass to run the point.
    2. Did you watch Game 7 of the playoffs? James wasn't effective.
    3. We can still get another starting guard with the LLE. DA has not signed with the Wolves or the Lakers yet.
    4. Starting both Sura and James hurts the rotation. Rotating players are ****ical for a teams success especially when injuries come to teams.

CONGRATULATIONS!! You win the Million Dollar Prize (claim when I win a $287 Powerball ticket!).

I too LOVE Mike James "b****" (sorry, I can't type it without thinking of Chappelle no matter how many times other people use it) off the bench. Instant offense and a quick spark. JVG did this in NY before: anyone remember that 8 seed he had?? Spree came off the bench. I don't think James is anything like Spree in his prime, but a similar concept still applies.

Wesley is solid, usually defended top Gaurd (depending on T-Mac's responibilites), and did a good job. Shooting wasn't quite on the mark as it had been in the past, but, as I read, he thinks his offseason surgery will help this. I like or depth, and I like a younger guy providing a spark off the bench, and I'm not so sure D Wes could provide that spark the way "Microwave" does.

But that's just me, I could be wrong (but like Charles Barkley, I doubt it!)

I like Mike James off the bench. I have a feeling I'd absolutely hate him as a starter. He drives me nuts for some stretches when he comes off the bench even. I can't imagine him playing more minutes. He's great for instant offense and energy off the bench. I don't think he's well suited for a greater role than that. I think he's a lot like John Starks in that way.

I also like James as a 6th man off the bench. Or maybe 7th man now since Howard may be backup.

I like Wesley as our starting SG. Sura is solid at PG...hopefully he's good to go this season.
