The guy has got to get out of the NFL. He belongs in the college game. Nebraska wants to make a big splash with a passing coach. Who better?

My wife is from Nebraska and is a huge Huskers fan, so that of course makes me a fan. I've thrown out the idea of Spurrier as a coach there, but I really don't know if it would work. For one, he would bring an offense that is the total opposite of what Nebraska has been running for the last few decades. It would take at least a few years to get the type of athletes in there that are needed for his Fun n Gun style. Also, I'm not sure how some of his over-the-top antics would be percieved by Husker nation. There coaches have always been very low-key and business like.

It would definetly be a huge splash though. I for one would love to see it, but I really don't see it happening.

I think they need to go out and get a big time coach though, firing Solich was ridiculous, he went what 8-3 (?), thats not bad, i understand that Nebraska is all about winning and they need to keep doing that to get recruits, but if Nebraska doesnt bring in a big name coach wont the fans in Nebraska be pissed?

It was my understanding that that was exactly what NU wanted to do... Get Pass Happy!

Spurrier would never go to Nebraska: too cold and not enough golf courses. I and some other writers were playing a round of golf with the man (he is a great golfer and one hell of a competitor to boot) and I asked if he liked the warm weather so much, why did he take the job at Washington. He replied that the main advantage to the NFL is that the job is not a year-round job, which affords him the opportunity to go back to Florida for the winter. In the college game, the job is a year round occupation. Besides, he said that recruiting was not only a huge pain in the ass, but that it had gotten especially dirty and vicious in recent years. It was the one part of the job he could do without. I really don't look for him to be back in the college ranks.

Yes they will be, although I dont think Spurrier is coming to Lincoln. If you look at the Huskers winning % againist ranked teams you will find that it has been pathetic during Solich`s tenure although his graduation % was outstanding. I would like to see Bo Pelini get the job, he`s a fiery coach and the Huskers need someone who can light a torch under a few butts.

    bama,
    excellent info. Thanks.

What do you expect the guy to do? Another year in Washington? Will he even have the option of sticking around?

How many more seasons of underachieving before Texas pulls the plug on Mack Brown?

I hope Spurrier stays at DC one more season. Brown should be gone after another Cotton/Holiday Bowl in 2004.

Apparently, the management would like him back......but, he has made some statements that sound like he is considering hanging up the visor. I wouldn't blame him, though. There's no need for him to prove anything in the college game.

Yes. Bo came to Nebraska this year as the Defensive Coordinator. He did a great job the past few weeks and mapped an excellent game plan last night. I doubt he will get it, but I would like to see it

Pellini does seem like a real fiery coach, and from what I could tell, the team seemed to respond to him last night. I just don't know if they should hire someone with no head coaching experience. Nebraska is a major program and they need to keep pace with the rest of the top schools.

    Spurrier Wants Out of Contract

The Steve Spurrier Era in Washington appears to be coming to a swift conclusion.

Spurrier, the Redskins; coach the last two seasons, has retained prominent agent Jimmy Sexton to evaluate his contract for the apparent purpose of severing ties with the team, ESPN.com has learned.

While there is still a chance that Spurrier might return as coach in 2004, his decision is the most significant indicator yet that he is seriously considering leaving his job.

League sources confirmed to ESPN.com that there have been discussions with team counsel aimed at defining a possible exit strategy for Spurrier. One source with knowledge of the situation said Spurrier could leave the Redskins as early as Tuesday but emphasized that the coach will not resign.

The source put the odds of Spurrier, 12-20 in two seasons, remaining as coach as less than 50-50.

That would suggest that a settlement of Spurrier's contract -- with three years remaining at a total value of $15 million -- is the most likely scenario if he is to depart.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Saturday that Spurrier and his wife, Jerri, were unhappy with his current situation and that he would take some time immediately after the season ended to think about his NFL future.

There have been persistent rumors this week that Spurrier, who has not used an agent in the past, might be seeking representation. Whether he stays or goes, sources said Spurrier wants a decidely quick resolution.

Spurrier has been purposely cryptic in recent days about his plans for the future. He told Washington-area media on Sunday that he "planned to" return to the team for next season, but alluded to issues that needed to be resolved with owner Dan Snyder. Some of the issues are believed to be control over staffing and input in personnel decisions.

Snyder has suggested that Spurrier's staff, the most inexperienced in the NFL and top-heavy with former University of Florida assistants, needed an upgrade. But by contract, Spurrier has the right to hire and fire members of his staff. Spurrier also is said to be seeking added sway in roster and personnel matters, something he previously has not requested.

There is no small degree of irony in Spurrier retaining Sexton; the agent represents several prominent Redskins, among them quarterback Patrick Ramsey, offensive linemen Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas, and middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. Sexton also has worked with Snyder extensively in the past.

You know who this really sucks for, the Washington Redskins. How are you supposed to get and maintain balance if you switch coaches every year or two? How many coaches have they been through in the past 5 years?

    Here is the article

The Steve Spurrier Era in Washington ended Tuesday after two seasons when the frustrated coach of the Redskins resigned.

Spurrier informed team owner Dan Snyder of his decision Tuesday morning, a Redskins source told Mortensen. The team is expected to announce Spurrier's resignation later today.

Spurrier, who had three years remaining on his contract at a total of $15 million, will get none of that money. The Redskins will cover the former coach's moving expenses, ESPN.com has learned.

Because Spurrier resigned, he cannot coach in the league for the next three years unless a future NFL employer is willing to give the Redskins compensation, in the form of draft picks, cash, or both.

The end of Spurrier's tenure in Washington, where he was 12-20 after a highly successful career coaching the University of Florida, was expedited by prominent agent Jimmy Sexton, whom Spurrier retained Tuesday.

Spurrier had been purposely cryptic in recent days about his plans for the future. He told Washington-area media on Sunday that he "planned to" return to the team for next season, but alluded to issues that needed to be resolved with Snyder. Some of the issues were believed to be control over staffing and input in player personnel decisions.

Snyder has suggested that Spurrier's staff, the most inexperienced in the NFL and top-heavy with former Florida Gator assistants, needed an upgrade. But by contract, Spurrier has the right to hire and fire members of his staff. Spurrier also was said to be seeking added sway in roster and personnel matters, something he previously has not requested.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN. ESPN.com senior writer Len Pasquarelli contributed to this report.
