Houston Teams with Unlikely Partner to Get Fit

    Sep 3, 10:11 am ET

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Houston, we think we know why you have a problem.
In a bid to see its residents lose weight and get fit, the nation's fattest city turned on Tuesday to an unlikely partner -- McDonald's .

The fast-food giant which brought the world belt-busting Big Macs and Quarter Pounders was named the official restaurant sponsor of Get Lean Houston, a civic fitness program created after Men's Fitness magazine named the city the nation's fattest three years in a row.

Echoing a trend in the food industry to offer healthier options, McDonald's said along with its traditional burgers and fries it would offer a special low-fat menu of salads, chicken sandwiches and a veggie burger in its 253 Houston restaurants, as well as tips on how to get fit.

It plans to distribute pedometers to encourage customers to walk off those extra pounds.

"McDonald's is a restaurant giant. The positive impact we can have on the community...is, in short, huge," Lee Labrada, a former Mr. Universe who is running the Get Lean Houston program, told a news conference.

Don Thompson, president of McDonald's West division, said the fact the company had 253 restaurants in Houston did not make it part of the city's fat problem. The problem, he said, was lack of exercise.

Making McDonald's the sponsor of "Get Lean Houston" is like making Jack Daniels the sponsor of "Get Sober Houston".

What about all those years they were pushing their fat down people's throats? Now they want to make it all better? If they want to help, then close down all McDonalds in Houston. Fast food is ruining this country. Their everywhere peddling their fattening food on America. Their stacked up on popular streets like sardines in a can. I would rather not have to look at them at all. Shut em all down. That will save lives right there and help people lose weight. Bunch of damn hypocrits wanting to help Houston get healthy after fattening us up for the better part of 3 decades. Hogwash.

You gotta love McDonald's new healthy salads

    Crispy Chicken Bacon Ranch Salad:
    370 calories
    21 grams fat
    7 grams saturated fat
    1040 mg sodium

Oh, I'm sorry, you wanted dressing on that salad? OK...

    290 calories
    30 grams fat
    4.5 grams saturated fat
    50 mg sodium

I'll have a diet coke with that...

Would you like a McGriddle sausage egg biscuit with that?

While were trying to "lean" houston up, let's make a biscuit that has syrup built into it. It's not enough that our biscuit alone can stop your heart. Let's put the syrup inside the biscuit. That way...it can serve as a slow release mechanism inside your body and do more damage than it would have otherwise. Then, will put a few heart stoppers in the biscuit as filling. I'm starting to sound like Jerry freaking Seinfeld ;).

Remove all the toppings and dressings from their salad and then you have finally got a healthy salad...lol...with your diet coke(no apple turnover).

McDonalds salads are pretty good. I prefer the Cali Cobb. I think if you take away the dressing and crotons its not that fatting, though Im probaly wrong.

Oh...sure...everyone just AVOID these places. That works...ask the Houstonians. I don't eat at McDonalds. I just want to save lives so we don't have little kids grow up to be fatties, try to sue McDonald's because their morbidly obese, and continue to keep Houston on top of the list of fattest cities in America.

    Enjoy your Big Mac, MadMac.

Captain Freedom.....up, up, and away!!!! LOL

No, I'm not seriously saying we should regulate these guys out of business. It's more of a statement of how much better off our country would be health-wise if there wasn't a damn fast food restaraunt around every ***damn f**king corner. So, the answer is don't go there? Yea...that works obviously. These same restaraunts made it their business to make the fattiest foods imaginable available. Their only just now offering salads and ways to make healthier food while reducing the fat and unhealthy aspects. As long as you can keep herding the fat people in and making money, who cares about the health aspects? Hey, the fat people over there can't control their eating habits. Get 'em!!!! Meanwhile, skinny guy over here wants the freedom to enjoy his Big Mac. LOL

That's what makes America great. Fast food at every corner.

I'm okay. I'm about to get off work and go jog for a mile or two to burn off that Big Mac and fries that is still hanging out in my colon from three years ago. Then, I'm going to have a healthy soy protein shake with some fruit in it for dinner. Fun.

I am currently chomping down the biggest bowl of fruit known in mankind. My coworkers are laughing.

I am seriously considering becoming a "fruiterian"

You know, if I wanted a salad, I wouldn't be going to McDonald's, or any fast food place for that matter...

I'm sure there good, but if I'm pulling through the drive-thru, you can bet your arse that it'll be for a Big Mac Super-sized value meal with a Diet coke...;)

Great point. People have good intentions on ordering right but when they get there it's the old "Give me a #1 and super-size it like my gut".

If anyone recalls...Taco Bell tried the healthy menu by offering "light" versions of their fatty counterparts. The light taco, the light soft taco, the light burrito, etc. . However, they determined that people weren't ordering the "light" menu items and it was unprofitable to carry these items. Why? Cause when it comes right down to it and left up to the person reading the menu...they are going to order really what they want. It's too bad, too, cause I actually did order "light" Taco Bell items back then.

I wish these fast food places would offer oven-baked fries versus deep fried fries. They should offer the healthy options regardless in my opinion. Unfortunately, their so tuned to greed and money that they would churn out lard logs if people would eat them. Forget how it looks, tastes, and digests. You eat 'em...we got 'em. Lard logs people! LOL

Hey Dragp - you said you still had a bit of a gut despite running more miles than I drive each week? I gained weight on what was basically a fruiterian diet. Don't forget that you are getting a ton of sugar with that fruit.
