I was wanting to possibly join or form a band (bass player). Ive looked throught the Houston Press but its kind of limited. Are there any other sources for finding musicians?
The JAMS, baby! Sunday night - Shakespeare's Pub (out west on Memorial Dr.) Tuesday night - Hideaway (at Richmond & Dunvale) Wednesday night - Big Easy (on Kirby in West U) Thursday night - DanElectro's (24th Street in the Heights) Best one is Sunday....the Shakespeare's jam is hosted by Spare Time Murray, bass player for my blues band, the Dukes of Houston. These jams are all blues oriented. For other types of jams (I believe Alison Fisher hosts a rock and roll jam on Tuesday nights at the Big Top, next to the Continental Club, and there are country jams around town as well), go to www.kpft.com and bring up the music calendar (under community).
I should be out at Shakespeare's jam in a few weeks... It'll be my first time playing out since I started playing guitar last year... (after many, many, many shows as a bass player, it will just be strange to be up there with a different instrument in my hands). So excited about it.
Drew: I had a perfect gig for you - even recommended you - but the artist is moving to Austin. I actually may know of one or two others depending on what you want to do. Drop me an email.
You can also try bulletin boards at music stores and/or rehearsal studios. Granted, most of those are for high school deathmetal-heads but you might get lucky. I sure did.
No dobut Pimp..... Im looking to join a band that plays stuff like Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard and Weezer. Edgy melodic stuf. Seems like that always happens Jeff. I'll drop you a line.
That place hasn't been updated since like April I think. If you wanna search online, I'd go to houstonbands.net and then click on the "gigs" link. Funny thing is the gigs link is a musician's classified board and has nothing to do with gigs at all.
One just isn't enough to describe my feelings about that, assuming you are talking about who I think you are talking about. I'll leave the advice for Drewdog to the pros, but I certainly wish you well.
Yup, Stacey is moving end of the month. I'm putting her website together for her and she'll be back to play on occassion. She just thinks she needs to play music constantly, even if it is open mic's and the like, to get better. She really just needs a change of scenery I guess. I hate to be pessimistic, but that is such a common desire when you are young - get out of town and find something better - but so often, you end up coming back realizing it really wasn't that much better. It is more about you than it is about where you are. BTW, orange is in's next show at Rudz is with Lisa Novak. I bet you would like her - really rootsy folk/country/blues rock singer. The guitarist is a very good old friend of mine.
No kidding. I can never remember where this cat actually lives. On another note, I played sax from when I was 11 until I was about 25. I haven't really touched it since I graduated from college four years ago, but I'd love to get back into it if I can manage the time....my work schedule is kind of crazy since I work in a psych hospital. If anybody is curious, drop me an email at Lynus302@yahoo.com.
Drewdog -- I've actually managed to meet a lot of interesting cats just hauling my guitar up to the coffee shop. Most'll come up and sit and start talking shop. Even met a few jam buddies that way. Also, does anyone know of any decent open hip-hop mics. I'm looking to start up a r&b/hip-oriented project but I don't know any decent mc's and I can't rap and play guitar at the same time.
