ima_drummer's post talked of a speed trap on Shepherd near I-10.
Do you know of a hot speed trap? Tell us about it...

Another speed trap is Yale at I-10. The cops sit under the overpass and hide behind the large concrete pillars, then they stick their gun out and bust you... The speed limit from Washington to I-10 on Yale is 30 mph. As soon as I pass the railroad tracks underpass, I make sure I'm doing 30, then survey the road, if you can see the cops car, they're there... they usually already have someone pulled over. They do this about 2 times a week and lately they have started busting people coming the other direction, out of the Heights to Washington.

I don't know why, but the last couple of times that I've gone in the South turnaround under the freeway at 59 and Hillcroft, there have been a couple of cop cars sitting there pulling people over. Normally the officers are out of their cars, which are up on the curb, and will walk up, point at you, and tell you to pull over while you're going slow. They got a guy in front of me last time I went there. The only thing I can think of is they're checking stickers.

Another speed trap is Allen Parkway off I-45, there are cops standing there halfway towards Studemont/Montrose. It's really hard to see them because of the curve/slope I think. The speed limit is 40.

Nope. They are pulling over potential johns. There are a ton of streetwalker hookers in that area. If they see you driving slow and checking out the chicks on the street, especially if you have a twenty dollar bill in your mouth, they will pull you over.

There is one near where I work. Chimney rock between san felipe and westheimer. They are usually up during lunch. It's a 30 mph speed limit through there so they catch people all the time. Another one is right by the police station on Bellaire near Tan Tan.

All through the area where I live (Meyerland/Westbury), Constables hang out during evening rush hour and pop people right and left for speeding and running stop signs. They almost got me yesterday for running a stop sign. Meanwhile, I'm sure there are at least a couple of homes in the neighborhood getting burglarized while the Constables pull this shizznit.

Don't know about that, but I do know they are checking for seatbelts when they are up on the curb beneath the overpass like that......they've been doing the same thing at the 290/Hollister turnaround.

The one I was referring to is on that hill on Shepherd heading north just after getting off I-10. You accelerate to get over the hill and they're at the bottom waiting for you. They had 3 or 4 cop cars in the business parking lot on the left and they have 1 guy standing in the middle of the street pointing cars into the lot to get their tickets.

Another one is at Studemont and I-10. When you're on Studemont and you turn west to get on I-10, they catch you when you pick up speed on the feeder before you take the entrance.

    Also anywhere in Bellaire....

Last couple weeks I've seen an HPD Motorcycle cop working on the 290 feeder road (inbound/East) right by Antoine.

    * I live in the Height and those cops are on Shepard quite often. Also going the other direction on Durham is another favorite spot of theirs. Right after the Hump and before I-10.

I actuall got stopped there for 45 in a 35 at 10pm, April 4 2002. While taking my wife to the hospital. She was in labor with my son and the cop offered to call an ambulance then gave me a verbal warning. :D

I'm not big to endorse products unless I really believe they work so with that in mind...

I have had a Valentine1 radar detector for about 3 years. It was $400 but has EASILY saved me thousands in tickets. I am a speed demon. I would normally go around 100mph on 290 between Houston and Austin when that was a weekly trip. With the Valentine I can get cops from over 2 miles away in ALL DIRECTIONS. 360 degrees of coverage.
Best strategy with a radar detector is to pick a "rabbit" either someone going as fast as you are to bounce between cars as you pass. When the radar starts to go off you simply put yourself just behind and to the right or left of that car and then if the cop does an instant on he gets the other car.
We also drove in a pack to New Mexico and AVERAGED 110 mph. Everybody ont he group had a Valentine1. We could "see" cops from over 3 miles away and over hills.

    For more info visit www.valentine1.com

Sadly, I recently found out my radar detector doesn't work when I don't have it plugged in for power, because I always have to take it down for fear of having it stolen again.

    Laziness bites.

Oh, and South Post Oak Lane, where the speed limit is 30MPH, but I (and others) do well over 55.

Be careful. I miss the NW side of Houston, where I rarely saw a cop. By the Galleria, I see them everywhere all the time. Perhaps I should consider buckling up now.

The Kemah Police is famous for getting people coming down from the bridge from Seabrook into Kemah. You have to slow way down when you get to the bottom. Some guy had a website once like kemahpolicesucks.com but I can't find it. There was an article about it in the Chron a few years ago.

That's funny...I drive at that intersection and around there usually 2-5 times a day and I never see cops/hear my radar goin off or see people gettin pulled over.

I used to as recently as a week ago, I sped all the time, and I never had a problem there. I have a radar detector too and I don't remember hearing it go off too often.
