We all knew it just a matter of time...now it's official. HOUSTON…Reliant Park and the University of Houston were very pleased to learn today that the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee has selected Houston and Reliant Park as one of the finalist sites to host the Final Four beginning in 2008. The committee chose six sites to compete for the right to host the Final Four in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The committees will evaluate the six cities this winter and spring and will name the sites in late June. 2004 Super Bowl 2004 MLB All-Star game 200? Final Four I love this city.
Don't count on the Big 12 football championship ever returning to Reliant Stadium. The empty seats looked as bad as the field. Even though the game was listed as a sellout (69,500), I doubt there was more than 55,000 fans.
It'll come back. The only way that game sells out is if it's in Denver, and I'm sure the Big 12 will understand that. Colorado travels like ****, and the only reason it wasn't apparent last year was that Texas travels well enough to compensate for it. Houston had very little to do with the game's attendance.
If we can get another NFL team after averaging 20k fans for the Oilers the last couple of years, we can get another Big 12 championship game. Let's just hope we don't have to pay $1B to get the game, like Bob paid for the Texans...
To add to that, OU was coming off of 2 late season losses and was not really playing for anything that would get thier fans too excited to spend money or time to travel to Houston. I personally sold 6 tickets. 4 to a friend who went to OU and lives in Dallas for double face value and I know for a fact they were not used. There was no excitement about the game. Houston could not have had a more meaningless matchup. They would have been better off if Tech, Iowa St or K St were in the game as it would have at least been a big deal to those schools.
absolutely...the attendance for the big xii championship would not have been any better in dallas or st. louis...it was a conference championship with absolute zero meaning in the national championship picture. yawn. the venue is simply too nice to not bring the event back. also...add to that list of events a likely nba all star game after the new arena is built.
What if that had been Texas vs Nebraska after good seasons? Do you think that would have sold out? It'll be back.
hehehe On the Big 12 game, the commish said attendance will be a factor in determining the next South venue. Unfortunately Houston got stuck with a sh!tty game. People are going to remember the attendance not the matchup. I expect Dallas or San Antonio to get the game in 2005.
You are right there Free Willy. I would even go so far as to say if just one of those teams were undefeated or a one loss team there would be 15,000 fewer no shows. Both teams travel well, even if the tickets are sold, people are not going to spend the money (room & travel) to go see the game. It was a sell out, there were 17,500 no shows.
damn the lack of edit... ...most people are not going to go to the game to root on the team in a relatively meaningless game. They would be more inclined to spend that money on the bowl game.
no way that houston doesn't get it back..i'd be shocked. the game was a non-factor on the national championship scene, and the big xii knows that...the facility is among the best in the country and better than anything the other choices have to offer...it will be back
