Is it down permanently or something? Weird..It was on yesterday and today its completely off the radio... Did I miss something?
If you go xxx.espn790.com you get this message: "Due to damage from Hurricane Rita, we are currently off the air. We hope to be back very soon, and we hope you and your family are safe."
Just another reason it's hard for me to take 790 seriously. If they ever got it together and added more local (or transplanted) talent to their lineup, 610 would be dead in the water. Houston sportsradio consists of one wounded fish that doesn't think it's wounded and one fish that's still lying paralyzed on the ocean floor.
They probably figure being off the air is better than their rivals aruging about Drayton McLane on the eve of yet another Astros playoff berth.
I do! I always weigh the things that appear on this board. In fact, many of the changes that have happened at the station were asked for in this forum. But a blanket statement about us being dead in the water if 790 did anything worth a flip and one wounded fish that doesn't know its wounded is just uninformed. Our ratings are stonger than they have ever been and that is with a new competitor. Our revenues are in great shape. When people say they think Granato sucks or Matt is an a-hole then that is their opinion and more power to them. When they say the station sucks that is their opinion. But when they postulate that the station is not doing well its ridiculous. I can say all day that the NBA product sucks and that is an opinion but when I say that the NBA is a bad business when compared to the other professional sports that is just stupid; The NBA is stronger than ever. What he said was stupid.
I agree with you that much. I even agree that it's ok to be skeptical about their personal feelings that the Astros aren't spending money (as much as I disagree with the fact). I just feel that it's been happening way too often recently on the morning show where they would just like to argue with a point and raise their voices so much that it's a disturbance. I have always been open minded about different sides of an argument, but it makes no impression on anyone if no one could hear a thing they were saying over the constant bickering. If you heard this morning, and yesterday too, I believe. They just keep raising their voices and speak over each other that it became blatant noise.
I didn't mean 610 doesn't make a profit or that year over year ratings aren't up. I couldn't care less about radio as a business operation. You took me completely wrong. I don't find 610 or 790 very entertaining. When I go out of town and listen to other sportsradio, most of the time it is better (not always). We all have our personal preferences, and for entertainment value, the illustrations used in the prior post represent my feelings on the two stations. Chance, don't take offense so easily. I like the fact you come on here and leave yourself open. That takes some guts. Unfortunately, you are showing the same hypersensitivity shown by some in the Rita threads. Chill. John & Lance & Rich & Mark have defenders here too. Don't take me seriously.
No biggie. I know better than to take work stuff on this board personally. I guess I was just seizing an opportunity. Our August #'s came in and they were through the roof so I was geeked. My competitor looks like a randy monkey lovingly gazing at a football right about now and that made me happy. Then I read your post and it seemed rather harsh and not like a personal point of view but rather speculation that was really wrong IMO. BTW - I totally agree with your thoughts on the animal. I just differ about 610. I think we are sounding better all the time. To a DIE HARD sports fan we leave a lot to be desired, I get that. But for Joe Public we are humming right along and Joe Public outnumbers Die Hard sports fan so we have to go with that.
I could not agree with you more. That argument was unlistenable. I wanted to hear Justice but he was overshadowed.
Ummm, Chance, could we perhaps get a "Naked Chicks Sports Night" on 610, and perhaps a live video feed on 610s website? Just a thought.......
I still listen to 610 more than 790...except for basketball coverage. Palillo just KILLS Rich and Marc when it comes to the Rockets. It isn't even close. Hell, the other day, Marc didn't even know when training camp opened. Lance is GREAT for hoops and John does well too. Matt and Adam have quickly become one of my favorite shows on radio, sports or otherwise. But, when it comes to drive time, I'd rather hear Palillo.
When asked by a caller this morning, neither John nor Lance knew when Rockets training camp started. Pathetic.
Vanderdork didn't know Sura was being operated on either. This was just after Dave Harbison mentioned it during the sports flash.
