Aside from employing dirty tricks like stepping under a jumpshooter's foot or "accidentally" kicking someone in the face, Battier is a lot like Bowen.
Battier is better than Bowen. More offense, higher basketball IQ, and comparable defense. Bowen's only claim to fame is that he happened to find a niche on some good Spurs teams. Saying Battier is the next Bowen is kind of like saying Carl Landry is the next Malik Rose.
Agreed that Shane > Bowen I wonder how many teams in the league Bowen would start for other than S.A. My guess is not very many at all. The karate kick was pretty awesome though. If I still played I definitely would have tried to pull that one off in a pick up game.
I bet there is a lot of teams that would start Bruce Bowen. He's one of those players that you hate when he's playing for someone else but you would probably love to have.
Good read, Jason. Battier has been outstanding during this run. I was thinking he might get moved in a deal, but he's making me very glad he wasn't.
I understand your analogy but would have preferred a Prince-ly comparison. Bowen IMHO despite being an intelligent fellow is not anywhere near as complete a hoopster as is Battier. While Tayshaun has more of an O game than Shane I suspect if SB replaced TP in Detroit then we'd see more Prince / less Bowen in Battier. Keep on keepin' on. You are a breath of fresh Rocket air (or trees?).
Let's just say Artest would have been imported. Then, what would they have done with Battier? Or, if they had locked down Artest in a new contract over the summer then what would have been Battier's Rocket fate? BTW - I would want more than Rudy Gay back in a Shane Battier deal.
Nice read although the Battier-to-Bowen comparison doesn't surprise me at all, in fact it's pretty accurate. I've actually had a couple arguments regarding this topic before with some buddies of mine. They both do the same things and have the same responsibilities. Bowen is just more accomplished at it -- on the NBA level, at least.
decent reading. Bowen does a lot of nice things on court but is infamous as a dirty player. Shane's not above bending the rules but he isn't trying to kill anyone out there ... appreciate the links to your articles!
I always thought Battier is slower laterally and in general than Bowen and not as good on defense as Bowen was in his prime on the perimeter.
That's true, but Shane does better against bigger 3's like Carmelo Anthony, Paul Pierce, Grant Hill, Bonzi who really bully Bowen down low. Plus Shane has the ability to shoot midrange jumpers and finish around the basket although he doesn't showcase them a lot. Defensively Bowen is quicker (not much), but he has slowed down. His main weapon is his pestiness. Shane is bigger and takes good charges. Shane is a better rebounder. Shane is a better passer. Shane is a very good shotblocker for his position. Bowen is deadly shooting corner 3 pointers, but Shane is a fundamentally better shooter. Shane can take a last second shot, Bowen is not good anywhere, expect the corner 3's. 3 years ago I would take Bowen. Today, I take Shane
