As most of us in Houston are finding it cold as **** outside this morning news of a stronger front approaching towards the end of the week is a bit crazy. The temperature throughout the weekend is supposed to below freezing overnight and I just wanted to start a thread with advise on preparing a home (plants, pipes, pets) for this. in advance, Yes I do think Katy has to evacuate.
The day it snowed, my apt complex sent out little notes about what to do for the freeze. They told us to leave our heat on, let our pipes drip a little, and leave the doors for the cabinets under the sink open. I don't know if that would really help, but I live in an old apt complex, so the pipes are old, and I did it anyway.
Might be a weird question, but I'll ask anyways. People say to insulate the pipes of their house. In my backyard, I have one water spout, and that is only 6-12 inches from the brick of my house. In my old house I did have some exposed pipes, but can't seem to find any in my new house. Any idea if i still have to do something?
Take some medium-sized towels and wrap them. It's free and it's better to be safe than sorry. If you've never experienced pipes bursting, it sucks....really really bad.
This is getting old! Winter here is supposed to be a couple of weeks of cold, maybe late January with mostly low 70's/high 60's during the day and 50's at night. I don't remember a week of that since like October. I'm sick of dry skin, piling on clothes and having hard nips.
Any exposed pipe on the outside of the house should be insulated, Home Depot sells 3/4" and 1/2" insulation that just slides around the pipe for under $2 for a 6ft section.
Is global warming causing all these freezes? All I know is I need to hurry up and get my comforter to the cleaners so i can get it back before Friday night.
