The accident happened shortly before 9:45 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Wirt Road and Kingsbrook Road in southwest Houston. Police told News2Houston that the two men were riding down Wirt Road in a marked bike lane, single file, when witnesses said that they saw a light green Ford pickup bear down on them. "The truck veered over into the bike lane, striking both bicyclists (and) knocking them both off their bikes," Officer Rosalee Stafford said. One man was killed instantly, and the other was thrown 48 feet, authorities said. Paramedics rushed the injured man to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. According to witnesses, the driver of the truck didn't slow down, and just sped away into the dark. "The bicycles took the brunt of the impact, of course, but the vehicle will show some damage," Stafford said. Police said that the damage would be on the right-front part of the truck. The accident is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Houston Police Department's Hit-And-Run Squad at (713) 247-4065.
