does anyone know of any clubs in houston that play HOUSE music? and i dont mean the techno, trance, rave like music. been looking all over the city but cant find one. thanks!
It's really sad that few do. Red Door does if you request it, the DJ appreciates it. Saez and Zouk on Tuam does as well.
So what are the differences between House, Techno, Trance, and Rave music? I seriously have no clue...just curious.
That's what I love about living in Chicago now. Great hip hop scene. Great house music scene (house music started in Chicago). If done well, the mixing of the two genres is usually the best.
House music is generally more mainstream electronic, it still has the standard 4x4 beat but usually encompasses an upbeat/eight note and heavy on drum machine. Bob Sinclar (you might know him from "World Hold On", 2006 dance song of the year) is a great example of house, but specifically he's French House. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/F2oHz75BBsg&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/F2oHz75BBsg&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> David Guetta, before he got super mainstream, is a really great DJ that plays French House. This is his prob most famous song. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jLBSyhTyIYk&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jLBSyhTyIYk&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Trance generally is a faster bpm than house, but it tends to be formulaic and builds up every 4 measures. Best example is by the best DJ of them all, Tiesto <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2EaE0_gQLw0&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2EaE0_gQLw0&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> He is great live, his sold out show at Reliant was spectacular. Techno is a general term for electronic music, but really there are sub-genres for electronic music you really can't put it all together. Imogen Heap and Daft Punk are both electronic music but complete opposites.
Props to mentioning Chicago, home of house music. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DDwxhHwJ66M&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DDwxhHwJ66M&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Paul Johnson is a pioneer of the Chicago house scene. This was my jam back in the 90s
Some DJs actually have talent. Yeah I would have to say Rich's is probably the best place for house music. Bar Rio on Richmond is also good since most famous dj's perform there.
Really digging this tune. Thanks for sharing! Flying to Amsterdam in a week, then to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain....need some good tunes for my Zune HD.
thanks everyone for the great recommendations. i will check them out! chicago house is indeed great. i also love the house music they play in the bay area. wish houston caught on to some of the stuff they play out there. i do enjoy house thats more soul/disco-ish such as the stuff they play on ministry of sound and hedkandi.
Seamus Haji and Moto Blanco are the best DJs that use disco in their house remixes of top 40 songs. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/p_UYwawMh10&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/p_UYwawMh10&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> It really is a shame that the dance scene is not as big in Houston compared to the east/west coasts, although I've noticed in the past 2 years more and more people are starting to listen to it. Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Benni Benassi, and Armin Van Buuren has stopped by in the past 3 years, David Guetta has officially gone mainstream, Daft Punk sponsors DJ Hero, even Pitbull signed onto Ultra Records (which is why all his singles are all stolen house tracks) Maybe Texans view "techno" music as a bunch of Guidos fistpumping to that blood rave from Blade.
thanks duwende. how do you know when all these artists pass through houston? is there a site that has upcoming shows?
