Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy will return to the airwaves this weekend, calling NBA playoff games on ABC and ESPN with Mike Breen and Mark Jackson as a guest analyst, the network announced today.

"Jeff is the perfect addition to our broadcast team," said Norby Williamson, ESPN's executive vice president for studio and remote production. "In his previous work on television, he showed that he is a great communicator who can clearly break down the game in a simple and entertaining fashion."

Van Gundy, who last worked on television as an analyst for TNT Sports in 2002-2003, said in a statement issued by the network, "I would rather still be coaching in the playoffs, but this opportunity is the next best thing for me."

His first broadcast will be Friday, the network said.

Next year is the last season of Van Gundy's contract as the Rockets' coach, but he can terminate the contract up to three days after the end of the NBA season.

While the team has discussed "scenarios" under which Van Gundy could return, owner Leslie Alexander met last week with former Kings, Warriors and Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman. Adelman is the only name to have surfaced as a potential successor if Van Gundy does not return.

ABC/ESPN coverage of the NBA is horrible so Van Gundy is a good addition. I still think the team of Marv/JVG/Czar was the best of all time.

What this means to me is that JVG's situation will be clear and done before the ON AIR sign is lighted.

I like JVG. However, when he cannot find a way to coach a series win from TWO 2-no starts makes me look forward to having him in a booth, far far away...

So there are three Rockets still left in the playoffs:

1: Yao , watching playoffs on TV according to tinman.
2: TMAC, watching VC in the audience.
    3: JVG, TV analyst.

    Will they meet on Friday?

Being a color commentator on TV is Gumby's best role by far. His worst role was being the Rockets coach.

I'm a patient person and Jeff has earned the right to take his time with making his decision.

However, with him not spending time with family or moving away from the game to make a decision, I believe he should go ahead and make a decision.

The way this is playing out is just puzzling to me:

Jeff's not sure if he wants to coach the Rockets going forward. Yet, Rick Adelman has already been interviewed once for the position. Morey supposedly didn't know of the interview?

Not to mention this board and Houston radio analysts (610 and 790 to a lesser extent) doing a 180 and a large amount of people all of a sudden wanting Jeff back after the popular opinion being that of wanting Jeff going throughout most of the season. At least it seemed to me that most people wanted him gone after reading the board the whole season.

I would like this to just be over with so we could move forward with acquiring players, personnel, and establishing a new philosophy or continuing with the old one.

    Boki's still playing.

And so is Eric Piatkowski. If sitting on the bench counts.

Wow Les goes out and talks to Adelman and the next thing you know JVG has this TV gig already setup and ready to go. What a hypocrite JVG has become. I'm glad we canned in for real. Good riddance

I say Jeff would be a good replacment for Clyde on the Rockets broadcasts.

Sorry but that's not warranted. He has a higher overall winning % than any coach in team history and is a few tenths of a percent behind Rudy for team lead. You might not have liked him but I don't think there are many coaches who could have been as successful as he was in 05 and 07 given the situation the Rockets were in in the early parts of those seasons.

By making a media b**** fest with his constant reminder of how much it has torn him mentally to lose in the playoffs and that he was struggling day to day and making the Rockets look bad for going behind his back to interview Adelman. All the while he was greasing studio executive's ball to land a spot back on TV doing commentary gigs.

Avery Johnson suffered a much bigger defeat especially how he is team just folded after 2 years of preaching mental toughness and character yet you don't see him going to do commentary on national TV do you?

Don't give me the "it's part of his coping process" cause I don't buy that. JVG knew before the season started that if he doesn't make it pass the 1st round then his ass will get canned for sure. Les has made that clear for a while now. I just hate how JVG gave the situation his own angle to so he could come out looking competent and make the Rockets management look silly. He is just trying to save his head so it would look much better on his resume the next time he interviews for a team and they ask "Why did you fail to make the 2nd round 3 times in a row?" Blame it on the owner, players and management and anyone except yourself. Boo hoo JVG go cry me a river!

talk about ranting out of your ass. you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

has it occurred to you that he has broadacasted before, did it last year when the rockets weren't in the playoffs, and simply got contacted again since he's not working? that makes too much sense i suppose.

Jeff doesn't have to even try to get a job on TV. TV guys were lining up to hire him already. As some of you might have noticed, there is a shortage of quality color commentators out there.

I think there is nothing wrong with JVG doing TV commentation.

It is probably a way for him to enjoy the game for what it is, and not take things way too seriously (like eg. coaching). Give him a break OK.

There is nothing wrong at all with JVG doing this. How some of you twist it into hatred is amazing. Still, both sides should have ended the charade a long time ago when the negotiations broke down. The Rockets insistence that it's completely in JVG's court is ludicrous. Technically that is true because a contract is in place but everyone knows he cannot come back as a 100% lame duck without a renegotiation of some sort. The "mutual decision" blah blah blah announcement is overdue. It's like Les does not want to be held responsible for deciding JVG will not be back. At the same time, it looks like JVG is delaying the decision in order to force the Rockets to announce a decision. It's safe to say at this time things are acrimonious. Anyone who still thinks there is any chance at all JVG is coming back is naive.
