    Stoudamire finds home in Memphis
Rockets to look elsewhere for help in their backcourt

After reaching an agreement with free-agent power forward Stromile Swift two weeks ago, the Rockets turned their attention to landing a veteran guard for their backcourt.

The player atop their wish list — Houston resident Damon Stoudamire — had expressed an interest in joining the team.

But according to sources, Stoudamire and the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed on a four-year, $17 million deal that will be finished when the NBA lifts its moratorium on signings next week at the completion of the league's labor deal.

Stoudamire averaged 15.8 points and 5.7 assists with Portland last season.

Stoudamire, 31, appears to be a good fit for the Grizzlies, who are bracing for the loss of Earl Watson. Memphis reportedly is pursuing a sign-and-trade deal for Watson, who spent three seasons backing up point guard Jason Williams.

With Stoudamire having made $12.5 million with the Trail Blazers last season and the Rockets able to offer their salary-cap exemption of only $1.8 million, the teams reportedly were discussing a sign-and-trade deal.

Rockets forwards Clarence Weatherspoon, owed $6.53 million over the final year of his contract, and Juwan Howard, due $26 million over four years, reportedly were dangled as trade bait, but the two clubs failed to reach an agreement, paving the way for Stoudamire to sign with Memphis.

Miami and Cleveland also reportedly were interested. With Stoudamire off the market, the Rockets will alter their search for backcourt help.

Latrell Sprewell, Michael Finley and Gary Payton have been discussed as options.

Coincidentally, Stoudamire is scheduled to participate in a celebrity charity softball tournament hosted by Rockets swingman Tracy McGrady this afternoon in League City.

The Rockets also learned that one of their free agents — forward Scott Padgett — has agreed to a multiyear deal with Phoenix. Padgett, 29, averaged 3.8 points and 2.6 rebounds over two seasons with the Rockets. He is expected to back up All-Star Amare Stoudemire.

I'm not too bummed, and I know some others around here are happy. I'd love to see us resign Deke and Barry, and then grab one last player for the LLE: either Finley/Spreewell or a younger player to help us out at either the PG or SG spot. Looks like we might just play the waiting game and see who is left over and willing to take the LLE.

Saving our expiring contracts for the trade deadline might land us a player to get us to the Finals, or dare I say... win us a championship...

I don't mind necessarily that we didn't sign him, but I kind of wish it wasn't the Grizzlies that did. No matter though.

4yrs/$17MM? We didn't have a chance. Getting DS at the LLE was a pipe dream. From the Grizz point of view, they were desperate for a starter since they will lose both Jason Williams and Earl Watson.

OK CD/JVG, show us Plan B.

Call me crazy and there is no info behind this, but I have to now wonder if they will turn to Nick Van Exel and try the younger point guard chase one more time next season.

    Or maybe Sam Cassell.

Sign Spree or Finley with the LLE, possibly Jay Williams for the minimum. Then sit on our expiring contracts until we get close to the deadline.

This is beginning to look alot like last summer. One 'Bombastic signing' and the nothing much until January. Well, at least, Sura, James and Wesley are under contract until next year. Maybe JB will come back and we will look just like last year except for SS.

I just gotta say I doubt you will get any of those people for the LLE unless you are talking about Duke's Jay Williams.

I think Spree said $30 mil isn't enough to feed his family for 3 years. I don't see him taking LLE.

Finley may not be available till the last week before the season.

We'd better have a plan B. But let's bring back Deke and Barry first.
