    ROCKETS NOTES
McGrady to play one of two in future back-to-backs
By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle
    Dec. 29, 2008, 4:13PM

Rockets guard Tracy McGrady returned to the court on Monday after missing Saturday’s game, but said that he and the team have agreed that he will not play both games when the Rockets play two games in as many nights. After struggling in New Orleans on Friday, McGrady sat out Saturday’s game against the Utah Jazz.

"Me and coach talked about it and I think when we do have back-to-backs, we’ll really have communication to decide which game I should play and which game I should sit out. Moving forward, I won’t be playing on back-to-backs and that will be the plan from this point on.

"I can’t hurt it, but you go hard one night, the next night, it doesn’t have that same feeling. It’s really painful, weak. That’s why we decided not to play on back-to-backs."

McGrady said he has not felt "my normal self" since the last game of the playoffs when he played after an anti-inflammatory injection.

"I can’t explode the way I want to," McGrady said. "It’s hard to do certain things normally I’m capable of doing. I’m kind of limited in some ways to playing my normal way. That’s why I have to make some adjustments. It works some nights; some nights it doesn’t."

McGrady, however, said he expected that he will fully recover and be able to play back-to-backs again this season.

"We told him, ‘look you just need to get healthy,’" Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. "He felt like, as long as he wasn’t going in back-to-back, that might be the best plan. Keith (Jones, the Rockets athletic trainer) was there and he said that sounded fine, he was going to doctors. Everyone’s on the same page. We just want him to get healthy, whatever plan gets him there."

    Mutombo decision not imminent

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said he had "a good meeting" with the agent representing Dikembe Mutombo, but that he does not expect a decision for several days as the earliest.

Since last week’s trade of Steve Francis to Memphis moved the Rockets out of position to be required to pay a luxury tax, Morey has spoken several times with Mutombo in addition to Monday’s meeting with David Falk to express the team’s interest in bringing back Mutombo.

"He is considering his options, which he has every right to do," Morey said.

This seems to be T-mac's main problem. He needs to realize that he is getting older and even at a young 29 he has been in the league a long time. He just needs to adjust through this and try to play through it.

    I think that's a great idea.

His body is made of porcelain. We'll get the most out of him this way.

The only thing better would be a solid trade pulled off by Morey.

once again, mcgrady opting to sit out, not at the behest of the trainers or team doctors, but because he doesnt FEEL strong.

but hey, thats his (21 million dollar) prerogative.

What's good enough for Shaq is good enough for TMac, I guess.

And furthermore, someone ought to introduce T-Mac to this concept called "aging." If not being able to do something like he used to is enough to make him sit out, it's time for him to retire from life. Probably the majority of the world can't do stuff like they used to.

     Mar 9 2009 @ Denver Nuggets

     Mar 13 2009 @ Charlotte Bobcats
Mar 14 2009 San Antonio Spurs

So if T-Mac sticks to this plan, he'll miss at least 10 more games the rest of the way.

I suppose T-Mac now is going to use aging as a new excuse for not playing, it wouldn't surprise me to hear next game there was a meeting between him and management about how bad his aging is hurting him. Someone needs to let T-mac know its better to burn out then fade away. Def Lepard FTW!

    Haha, exactly.

And use that 10 million to sign a star player!!

If Mac plays well he should just focus on the next game.

If he plays crap he should just say "I played crap" - Im so over the bi play.

I did a quick search over the remaining schedule and it looks like we have 10 more back-to-backs. However, there's one or two periods of stretches where we have a game every other day and I wouldn't be surprised if T-Mac's going to sit out on some of those games too.

EDIT: durvasa already beat me to it!

Not even, he said that he hopes to play in back-to-backs by the end of the year.

what about the 4 games in 5 days looks like we have 2 more of those stretches is he going to just play one of those games?

sheesh if its not hurt anymore I dont see how not playing is going to help it. He needs to get it stronger, hit the weights (if thats possible) if not get as much game action as possible. Would rather him play 15-20 mins per game even in back to backs instead of 30-40 mins for one of those games

honestly at this point its not even knee-jerk for me anymore if Morey is able to get a 3rd-tier level all-star (michael redd) or two solid role players for tmac you have to do it.

^ I missed that. The only quote I saw from Tracy is that he said the plan from here on out would be him missing 1-game on back to backs.
