Houston Voted Top City To Live In Black Enterprise magazine conducted a survey earlier in the year and concluded that Houston is the No. 1 city for African-Americans to live in. Houston was recently named fattest city in America and topped the smoggiest city list last year. But this time, the city has something to be proud about. The magazine, which hit newsstands Tuesday, announced that of all the major U.S. cities, Houston was best overall. New York and Los Angeles, the most populous cities in America, didn't even crack the top 10. Houston beat out New York, L.A. and Chicago as the No. 1 place to live, work and play for African-Americans. "It welcomes all newcomers," Mayor Lee P. Brown said at a news conference. "For Houston, it is not where you came from, it is what you bring to the table." Brown credited Houston's diverse communities and can-do attitudes. The magazine surveyed 4,100 people and covered 21 quality-of-life issues, including income, earnings potential, cost of living, how close they were to their employer and cost of housing. "People are really making decisions in their life based on quality of life much more so than they did in the past," Earl Graves, president of Black Enterprise magazine, said. A sample of opinions outside the courthouse downtown by News2Houston showed that African-Americans generally agreed with the magazine's ranking, except for one attorney. "As an attorney and just dealing with all different types of people, it is just really hard for me to believe that," attorney Chawn Hubbard said. The ranking is a feather in the cap of the Brown administration, and an important tool for Houston's tourism business. The human resources director for Houston-based Compaq also said that the ranking is a "great, great recruitment tool." Im just glad to see small town memphis on that list! It is also suprising to see houston ahead of atlanta. ------------------ I am an invisible man.

Atlanta is 70% black, but maybe it was lower because of the extreme financial difference b/w North (white) and south (black). General racial complexities that generally do not exist in Houston. ------------------ "You sanctimonious philistines, who scoff at me!"
All in the south? Interesting... ------------------ "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning how to put food on their family while being put to death." It's back... Protrolls.com!
With Houston, Atlanta and Washington topping the list, it makes you wonder if they used crime as one of the 21 quality of life indicators. ------------------
And yet... Nice writing there. If they didn't even make the Top Ten, what's the point of saying we "beat them out"...? I mean, while LA is the best of the NBA's 29 teams, I wouldn't describe their championship as having been won "at the expense of Boston, Chicago, and the LA Clippers". We beat out D.C., Atlanta, Charlotte, and Memphis. The cities that didn't crack the Top 10? Screw em. [This message has been edited by BrianKagy (edited June 06, 2001).]
??????? Are these cities among the lowest in crime? that is good to know as well. I have heard good things about Charlotte and was not surprised to see it on the list But Memphis did surprise me. they all basketball cities Rocket River ------------------
My point is that Houston, Atlanta and DC are typically among the cities with the most crime. I would be curious to see the entire list they used to scrutinize the cities. ------------------
Well, I live in DC, and the crime in DC is at least top 5. To be honest I think DC is a wonderful place to live and is very exciting. It has a great night life, has some beautiful areas, and lots of stuff to do during the day. Great place to live. There is a very good feel about this place if you ask me. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
Interesting how the perception is that African-Americans are treated so poorly in the South and so well in the North...and studies like this seem to show quite the opposite. Race riots seem to happen in places like Ohio, NY and CA...we don't get that much here. I think people really get along pretty well here. I'd like to think that as a city, we do a better job of looking past skin color. Ultimately, it means nothing...as MLK said..."to be judged by the content of your character, not by the color of your skin." Good for H-Town!!! ------------------

Actually, bobrek, that isn't true of Houston. According to a study they released last year in the Chronicle, Houston ranked in the bottom third of major cities in terms of violent crime. We ranked in the top 10 in vehicle theft, but that isn't too surprising considering Houston is a car-centric city. BK: Damn straight!!! The Places Rated Guide has, for the last five years, consistently listed Houston in the top 5 in livibility. We would've been there sooner, but they used to weight weather more heavily and the hot summers and rain did us in. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
