April Fools joke in the works? Yahoo! Sports Houston signs, will try another Knicks comeback By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer 20 minutes ago * Buzz Up * Print NEW YORK (AP)—Allan Houston signed with the New York Knicks on Thursday and will attempt another comeback with his former team. Houston is fourth on the Knicks’ career scoring list, trailing only Hall of Famers Patrick Ewing, Walt Frazier and Willis Reed. He will be in training camp next week with the franchise he led to the 1999 NBA finals. Forced to retire in October 2005 because of knee pain, Houston briefly tried a comeback last year with the Knicks. He didn’t join the team until 10 days after practices began following the birth of a child, then played in only one exhibition game before ending his long-shot bid to make the team. He’ll be there from the start this time, but making the roster would still be difficult. Now 37, Houston hasn’t played in an NBA game since 2005 and would have to show that his knees can handle the running involved in new coach Mike D’Antoni’s uptempo system. Houston joined the Knicks in 1996 and made one of the most famous shots in franchise history, a running jumper in the closing seconds of the deciding Game 5 that gave New York an upset victory over top-seeded Miami in the first round off the 1999 playoffs. The Knicks went on to reach the finals, where they lost to San Antonio. A two-time All-Star and one of the league’s best outside shooters, Houston signed a much-criticized $100 million, six-year contract extension in 2001 and averaged a career-best 22.5 points in 2002-03. But chronic knee soreness then limited him. He averaged only 11.9 points in 20 games his final season, his lowest total since he was a rookie. Houston wore No. 20 in his nine seasons with the Knicks but will now wear No. 14 in honor of his father, Wade, one of the first African-American basketball players at the University of Louisville. “My father has been a great model of a man, and hopefully I can continue to carry what he taught me back to the court with the Knicks,” Houston said in a statement. “Off the court, this is also symbolic to encourage men to be committed fathers as their role remains one of the most important factors in the lives of our youth.”
I think we all know that he's gonna be cut in camp, Houston included. Poor guy. It seems like he really wanted to play and at least try and be worth a portion of that insane contract, but injuries wouldn't let him.
I don't get it. Allan Houston is 37 years old and hasn't played in 3 years. At best he would be their 15 man. But I think he's very good friends with Dolan and that explains it.
omg are you serious? didn't he try this last season and found himself to be completely outplayed by their 15th man? The knicks 15th man?! Come on man... can he even guard anyone now? Imagine him trying to guard lebron...
Dell had a nice jumper and it was ridiculously quick, but in terms of mechanics and form you really cant get more textbook than Allan Houston. I always liked him as a player and outside of everyone blasting him and the knicks for that contract (heck seriously everyone here would have taken the money too I never blame players taking huge contracts I blame management for giving it to them) he was one of the top 5-6 swing players in the league during his prime. if anything would love to see him and Jesus go at it at the 3pt contest at this years all star game..................along with Steve Novak
Used to be a real big fan of Houston. As has been said, seamless J. One of my fav games to watch is the Knicks at Lakers from (i think) 02-03 season when Kobe had 40 odd and AH rang up 53 in the Knicks upset win. Just a shame that the 100million plus contract made him look so overrated. A year or 2 ago there was a few posters around here wanting the Rocks to have a look at Allan, just as a shooter, but I would imagine he is done, and its just sad to see him still trying to give back to the team who set him up for life financially. (not too mention set up the next 5 generations of Houstons) His heart is in the right place.
Sounds similar to what happened to our own J. Howard, huh? Good player, huge contract and great expectations.
Well it is Coach D'aintone... the guy who turns people like Quentin Richardson into successful players because all they do is launch shots
chuck hayes jumper? no way in hell. now chuck's free throws, yeah, there's nothing finer. it's beautiful. I almost wish Shaq could take lessons from Chucky. it'd be awesome.
They should bring back one of my all time favorites Larry "Grandmama" Johnson <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_tF4tBsqJ2g&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_tF4tBsqJ2g&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
