I didn't like the name anyways. But man, that's pretty stupid the pressure being forced on them. Sources: Houston's soccer team to get new name 12:03 PM CST on Tuesday, February 14, 2006 From 11 News Staff Reports Houston soccer fans, get ready for a new name. Houston 1836 Sources told 11 News that after pressure from the Hispanic community the name “Houston 1836” will be changed. 1836 is the year Houston was founded, but it is also the year Texas declared its independence from Mexico. For many Mexican-Americans 1836 represents the year thousands of their forefathers lost their lives and their land. Officials for the Major League Soccer team will not confirm the name change, but they did say they would have a major announcement within the next week. No word on what the new name will be.
The Houston 610 Blues? The Houston Tailgaters? The Houston Construction? The Houston Concealed Weapons? **Just kidding around--Houston is the best city in the world!
This is freaking r****ded. Look: Either you are an American, or you're here illegally. Why should Americans, hispanic or otherwise, have a problem with the year 1836 representing when Texas became a Country?
The point is that this name is not meant to offend Mexicans, and their arguments that it does are weak, at best. And a legal resident would need a Visa. Again, they're not a citizen.
if I recall right, don't illegal immigrants have zero rights and can randomly be taken off and tortured? i remember reading this in the constitution somewhere.
I guess they won't be able to use Sam Houston as part of the logo or mascot either, so they probably can't use the Generals which was second in voting. (I think it was second)
