Trump 2.0 ’s wake-up call: Republicans are willing to defy him

Over the past 48 hours, 38 House Republicans rejected the stopgap spending bill that the president-elect publicly threw his weight behind after tanking Speaker Mike Johnson’s original proposal to keep the federal government running past Friday. Their defiance came even as Trump and his allies threatened to field primary challenges against GOP members who didn’t fall in line.

Then, on Friday night, the House passed a different version of the spending plan — one that didn’t include Trump’s demand to extend or end the debt limit. Nearly three-dozen Republicans voted against that one, too.

It’s the latest example of Trump confronting the limits of his power, especially over his own party. Senate Republicans already dealt Trump a massive blow when a handful of them made clear they wouldn’t support Trump’s first choice for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, leading to him withdrawing. And that was after they chose John Thune over Rick Scott for Senate GOP leader against the wishes of Trump’s allies.

Taken together, rank-and-file Hill Republicans’ early rebuffs of Trump show the party is far from total lock-step with the president-elect.

Trump wants to do away with the debt ceiling, which would enable his admin to

    • borrow more money to help finance another tax cut for the top 1% earners.

the 38 Republicans Who Defied Trump on Spending and Debt Ceiling

They include Chip Roy of Texas, who has been at odds with Mr. Trump since he declined to vote to overturn the 2020 election results and then endorsed Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida for president.

Roy has been publicly at war with the president-elect this week over Mr. Trump’s demand to raise the federal debt limit. He delivered a scathing lecture to his colleagues on the House floor on Thursday night,
chiding them for talking tough on spending and then voting to allow more trillions to be added to the government debt.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/house-may-avoided-shutdown-trump-001009845.html

President-elect Donald Trump, following the lead of his edgelord chancellor Elon Musk, has given congressional Democrats a gift that appears to keep on giving

That came in the shape of a looming government shutdown that was averted in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday evening, just six hours before the midnight deadline when government funding expires.

The House bill to avoid a shutdown was sent to the Senate for consideration, where it was overwhelmingly affirmed (if 38 minutes past the deadline into early Saturday.) President Joe Biden is expected to sign it into law swiftly.

Call this the ghosts of Christmas past and future, because Trump notoriously pushed the government into the nation's longest government shutdown just three days before Christmas in 2018.

Past is prologue here. Trump was always an unreliable ally from the start of his first term as president, when Republicans controlled the House and Senate but could not count on him as a team player.

Looks like Rhino's like Roy are going to be primaried in 2026.

Gotta get the Rhino's out to carry out what the people that voted for Trump want. Speaker Johnson's head should be on the chopping block too. Why not do single item agendas and then address this in 30 days after Trump's in office?

Curse those 38 Republicans who don't want to increase the deficit. Don't they know Trump needs to cut taxes and increase spending on pet projects?

Chip Roy is a lot of things (jackass, gladhander, qball, etc...) but he's absolutely not a fake Republican. He's actually more of a Republican than yall MAGAts are.

I would know, he's my Rep and I've met and talked (even had beers) multiple times.

    Here's his ridiculous gerrymandered district:

shortly after this defeat by House Republicans,

Trump 2.0 threatens to retake control of Panama Canal

This is not the first time Trump has openly considered territorial expansion.

    In recent weeks, he has
    • repeatedly mused about turning Canada into a U.S. state, though it is unclear how serious he is about the matter.
    • repeated the idea of buying Greenland
"For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," he wrote on Truth Social.

He needs to get on board with what the people voted for or be shown the doors.

They should have known that those billionaires aren't looking to hire Americans if they can fill their company positions with immigrants to exploit. Those speeches for MAGA rallies were simply a lot of BS for votes.

Tech and outsourcing companies continue to exploit the H-1B visa program at a time of mass layoffs

The top 30 H-1B employers hired 34,000 new H-1B workers in 2022 and laid off at least 85,000 workers in 2022 and early 2023

The H-1B visa program was created to fill labor shortages in professional fields and could be a valuable temporary work visa program, but new data show it is being subverted by employers that are not facing labor shortages and by outsourcing firms.

Rather than turning to the H-1B program as a last resort when U.S. workers cannot be found, most employers hire H-1B workers because they can be underpaid and are de facto indentured to the employer. This is evidenced by government data showing that technology companies continue to hire H-1B workers in large numbers while significantly reducing the sizes of their workforces.
