Two parter.... I am flying to Manila on Wed. Flying for free with frequent flier miles so I am taking the LONG way (Houston - SF - Toyko - Hong Kong - Manila). Total travel time....27 hours. Anyone recommend some books for the flight? Something lengthy would be key... Also, I borrowed a Gameboy Advance, any good games to buy? And yes, I got some Ambien from the doc, but I cant knock myself out for 27 straight hours....
maybe a portable dvd player will help. Or if your flying first class just bring your own dvd and you can probably play it in the flight. Good books, well I dont know, haven't read anything not assinged since 9th grade. as for gameboy, get something that has an adventure in it, time goes by FAAST.
I know this sounds cheesy, but if you haven't read Jurassic Park, that's your answer. I read that going to London a decade ago, and I kept reading it after I arrived. And yes, I'd already seen the movie.
First of all, I would not recommend taking the sleeping pills. They will just make you feel worse in the long run. What airline are you traveling? Most of the asian based carriers have personal video screens in economy so you can watch heaps of movies. I flew back from Houston to Perth about 4 weeks ago via LA, Hong Kong, and Singapore (35+hours) and I managed to watch 6 movies! (Of course, I was flying business which makes it a little more bearable). Best way to survice long flights is to have numerous forms of entertainment available to you. Take a couple of good books, a couple of magazines, you have your gameboy, and watch whatever movies you can. Enjoy Manila.
Most international flights now have an entertainment screen on every seat. They offer the latest movies, video games, music, etc. I flew to Dubai and Bombay two months ago from Houston. I saw Matrix 2, T3, Pirates of the Caribbean and another movie or two. Played some video games. Its not as bad as it used to be.
Twenty-seven hours?! Geez, dude! As for books, The DaVinci Code is a fast read. Life of Pi is a fantastic book, and it's really hard to put down. Both are fast-paced. As for GameBoy Advance, I mostly play Sonic 2, Tetris and Madden 2004. Everything or Nothing (Bond game) is alright, too. My wife played The Sims for about 10 hours this weekend, so it must be good, too. Have a great time in Manila -- I hear it's a wonderful place to visit.
You should really check out http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=2XKP0P4S6O&isbn=0316284610&itm=6. It's a very good book
I once flew back from Singapore via Tokyo and LA (26 hours) and only managed to get 1/2 sleep. That was HELL!!! Last time I flew on Singapre Airlines in Business Class and had my personal screen w/ movies on demand, video games, and about 20 radio stations. Aside from that I had my own CD's/Discman, Game Boy, and a few Books/Magazines. The first few times I made the trip to Singapore I was still a Freshman/Sophomore in high school and I just knocked out my summer reading during the trip. I remember reading "Cry, the Beloved Country" on my first trip and finishing "The Great Santini" on the return flight of my second trip. I cried when I finished that book.
Mmmmmmm.......pan-seared peppercorn crusted medallions of venison in a winter black elderberry and red wine sauce....served oh so rare so the blood is still eeking out long after it's been shot up sliced up and fired up for our consuming pleasure......oh the joys of being atop the food chain....these vegans are missin out on the party.
My long haul from Dhahran to Houston is about to take place. Flying outa here in 5 days....ugh I hate the flight. So long. I get to stop in Amsterdam but it's way too early in the morning to do anything. One more flight and I get to bump myself up to Business class for free on my next Houston to Saudi flight.
what am i missing out on? being named fatty fatbastard and making fun of someone being a girl because they dont eat animals. i personally eat meat, but i know and unless you just ignore the facts; everyone else knows its healthier. so dont make fun of someone for being healthy and also having enough courage to give up eating a hamburger.
damn , I thought I was in holiday travel Hell. best of luck, watch out for deep vein thrombosis.... i just like saying that. ....deep vein thrombosis
You could bring the first few books of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series if you haven't read them yet. Very entertaining read.
