Tinman's Horry thread is inspirational on so many levels but it got me to thinking. If you could be either Horry or Barkley and have their careers which guy would you choose to be and why? Barkley was a hall of fame player a dominant force on the basketball court, who got paid max money and has major fame. One of the best players of all time. But...he never won the big one. or... Robert Horry - A guy who made good money, and won 7 rings. Probably not as much cash, nor as much fame, but he has the jewelry. A role player with the rings... So, which Career or life would you want? DD
But a basketball career only lasts so long, Barkley will be able to make more of an impact POST career too...so that has to be factored in.... DD
I think Barkley may be too high status of choice. He's on TV all the time and is such a popular person in general. I don't know if I would want that much fame. Though, its not like Robert Horry can walk down the street without people knowing him or mistaking him for some other superstar.
Barkley.... The guy is the epitome of living it up. At the end of the day when it's all over it's just a ring or rings (for Horry) but Lots of stars go without winning a ring.
At least, Barkley played in finals. Maybe you should ask Tmac (Yao) or Horry: Whose career would you want?
Barkley. I don't like him (because of Rockets' hating) but I'd like to be that dominate player in the leauge. It is nice to be known as one of the best basketball players ever. Maney is important too but not the most important thing. Winning is maybe the best thing for player but to be known as a great player should be a great feeling
DD, a great question. Horry never wanted to be 'the man', ran from it (and was chased from Houston because of it). But his jewelery box is full even if his jewels are less so. Barkley never ran from anything (except hard work late in his career, see: Houston). His jewelery box has an MVP and jewels to match his jowls. Chuckles is a HoF'er and Big Shot Bob has endured (see: Kareem). I'll take the HoF'er/MVP/Finalist (because of his broad back). BTW - I trace the demise of Rudy and the Rockets to the ill-fated trade for CB.
just think about it this way.. in 10 or 20 years time.. no one will really mention Horry.. the younger generation most likely wont even know who he is...but people will still know Barkley's name
Barkley and even Horry would choose Barkley's career and everything he gained because of it, but that doesn't take away anything from Horry's career or his Hall of Fame worthiness.
There is a precedent for players like Horry making the Hall of Fame, either as a coat tail rider or as a one-of-a-kind gimmick or just being one-of-a-kind. If it makes you happy he can get in because he's the luckiest player of all time.

I wouldn't be comfortable being as famous as Barkley. Horry's partial anonymity is a big plus for me. I vote Horry. And really, even though he didn't make superstar money, he should have made enough to live comfortably for the rest of his life without working too hard.
I'd have to take the Barkley route (although with better grammer). For me, personally, there's so much I would like to do in my life. Having the money Barkley made, although underpaid most of his career, would allow me to do those things. Hell, he probably made twice as much as Horry just on endorsements. I'm sure he looks back and wishes he had a ring, but at the end of the day having that kind of recognition opens so many doors for you. Besides, playing basketball is just a game, right?
That's true, but with Barkley's money and earning potential, you could make sure that you and your unborn great-grandchildren will live comfortably as well long after your dead. This is why I don't understand why people think it's selfish for a player to leave a team or demand a few extra million, most of the time he's not doing it for himself, but for his family.
I'd be just fine with the millions Horry makes. I'm not interested in being as famous as Charles Barkley. Horry has a pretty sweet deal. He gets all the accolades when he wins, and none of the criticism when he loses. No pressure. He's also free to coast through 80% of the games he plays in without having to take any crap from the media. I'd rather be Horry.
Most? Give me a break. Some do, but these guys aren't living in 1 bedroom apartments while their family is living the high life. I'm sure guys like Shaq buy things for their family members, but they also have 9 Lamborgini's in different colors and houses with rooms that they've never even stepped foot in. Most of the time, these guys don't need extra money to send their cousin to college or whatever. They need it to put a pool on the roof of their mansion. Now I agree that these guys should try and get whatever money the market dictates, but let's not get confused about how they intend to use it.
