meaning someone "setting you up for a date"

 

no, means to engage in one's company.

 

I saw someone interviewing people at a bar asking this very question... 90% of men said it meant sex, about 50% of women said the same.

 

Hook up is synonymus with Get With.

I'm just glad I grew up in a time when it was cool to really like girls.

 

That never went away. It's just that hooking up has just become an alternative that many have embraced.

There was a really good article (I believe in the new york times) about the cyclical nature of sexual relationships.

Society generally will temporarily embrace a more liberal view of sex and then switch to a more conservative view and then the other way and so on and so forth. According to the article the "sexual revolution" of the 60s and early 70s marked the last phase of this sort and then society got really conservative again. The last liberal period before that was I believe the 20s and 30s before WWII.

Give it another 20 years and things will change again.

 

Believe it or not, this is absolutely true. Which is why I think homosexuals will never be treated as equals.

Hooking up... pretty much casual sex or some sort of ride ride. Men are hoping to get that out of it. Some individuals, mostly women, may be hoping not to go all the way with it. The whole point is that there is no relationship involved and you're just doing something because you're desperate and the person is there. Alcohol was probably involved.

Not good stuff, in my opinion.

 

It can mean several different things depending on the context of who says it.

Example I: I hooked John and Jane up yesterday and they are going to the movies on Friday. Meaning in Example I is bringing two people together.

Example II: Erica hooked up with Brad after the party last night and he said her poon smelled funny. Meaning in Example II is sex.

ExampleIII: I will hook you up with a free salad if you come eat tonight. Meaning in Example II is giving somebody else a deal.

Wow...I always thought of hooking up as just introducing me to your home girl so I can holla. I didnt know that most people viewed it as, GIVE ME SEX. Well, between me and my friends we use that term as a introduction cuz we're interested in that person. I guess if things work out, it does end up in sex, so I guess it could mean both terms.
