I'm trying to decide between these two places for my honeymoon. Has anyone here been to either one...or both to offer a comparison?

I can get an all-inclusive spot in Montego Bay, or this place in Honolulu (not all-inclusive, but the room and flights are like $1,000 less than the place in Jamaica). I'm going in July (hurricane season) and will be there for 6 days.

Oh...I also rarely eat breakfast and don't drink (fiancee does both though).

    Thanks....

I've never been to Hawaii so I can't really offer much of an opinion there, but I did go on a cruise that stopped in Jamaica (I can't remember which city... sorry). My family decided to go to a market area, and it was actually very, very scary. My little 7 year old brother got pulled into a store by some woman who was trying to sell him something, and it took us a while to find him and everywhere we went we would get weird, uncomfortable stares from the locals.

We did end up going to a beach later, though, and that was gorgeous. One of the best beaches I've ever been to.

We were only there for a day, and we just might have ended up in the wrong area or something, so my opinion might not be very valuable... but I figured I'd throw in what little experience I had.

Went to Hawaii and had a blast (but we were in Kauai...) Honolulu is more touristy but it is the United States so that is a bonus.

Had friends that went to Jamaica and did not have a good time. They were accosted by locals a lot at the markets and got funny looks because he is black and she was indian. Also they got bit by weird beach bugs and they were miserable for days at the end of the trip.

I've been to both places, and Hawaii wins easily. Jamaica is a hole. I never felt safe there. Unless you want to smoke the lettuce all day, definitely go to Hawaii. Hawaii is expensive, though

You have your choice of scenery. Do you like seeing rugged, volcanic landscape with an active lava flow to look at if you want to take a bit of a hike (Big island)? Or would you prefer watching the sunrise at about 10000 feet on the summit of Haleakala-bring a jacket (Maui)? See for yourselves why Kauai is called the Garden Isle (very popular for weddings/honeymoons). If you want the nightlife and more tourist-type activities, hit Honolulu (Oahu).

This is just a very cursory glance of what's available to do. If you have the time, you can island hop and experience a bit of everything.

Jamaica was, in my opinion, a one trick pony. With the drawback of being as hot as Houston but with higher humidity. Not to mention that the hustlers are out in full force.

Went on a Caribbean cruise last week, and one of the stops was Jamaica- Montego Bay, to be exact. I agree that the part with all the shops felt pretty shady. Lots of people trying to forcefully get you to enter their shops, buy stuff you don't want, etc. Several people offered me some things that are not quite legal in much of the U.S. :) Regardless, the country was gorgeous, but I didn't dig the atmosphere, mostly because I wasn't into the whole market scene.

Contrarily, the stop before that was Grand Cayman Island. We freaking loved it. Just as beautiful in terms of beaches, but the atmosphere was much more laid back and not nearly so obtrusive. Plus, you can do much of the same activities that would be fun in Jamaica. So, look into that. Just one person's opinion, though.....

(PS loved the jerk chicken and Red Stripe in Jamaica, though!)

Never been to Hawaii. Went to Jamaica for our honeymoon. It was pretty awesome. I wouldn't stay in Montego Bay, though. Go to Ocho Rios or Negril.

Never been to either, but Hawaii would be my choice... that's just some beautiful land and views there. Especially during sunsets.

My sister went on a cruise that stopped in Jamaica for her honeymoon. She said it had some very nice scenery, but echoed a lot of what people are saying here. Some places just felt 'unsafe' or shady, lots of people trying to sell you things/panhandling, etc.

I'd say Hawaii is probably the better bet.

See... I think going to an "exotic" location for a Honeymoon is a waste...

    Especially if you're a "Captain Kirk." ;)

Save a trip for an anniversary.

Go somewhere local for the honeymoon. It takes less time to get to, and you have more time "away" and "alone."

I have good friends who've been to both places. The most glowing reviews were for Hawaii. The Jamaica review is similar to what I see here, nice spots but inland felt too grimey.

What IROC it mentioned is very sensible, never considered that. Make sense to have commemorative events for later. But I'd figure the bride would want all the "Cloud 9" effect all together instead of stretched over time
