I was driving past the new arena (Toyota Center) on Sunday and couldn't help but notice around 40 to 50 homeless people in the park across the street from the arena. Isn't there something the Rockets or the City could do to help these people? It's really sad to see a multi-million dollar arena going up while so many people are living on the streets with almost nothing. I love the Rockets and the new stadium, but it was so depressing to see fellow human beings living like that. Whether it is their fault or not that they are homeless we don't know; however there has to be some way of helping them get back on their feet. It's a sad commentary on society, but material things ($$$$$$$$$) takes precedence over the welfare of others. I know the Rockets do alot for the community with the Fannie May Foundation and stuff like that but I wish they would do something for these people year round, not just around Thanksgiving or Christmas in order to be filmed and build positive PR. Anyways, just wanted to know if anyone else noticed those unfortunate people and what they thought about it. One Love. Peace out.

I think we should just take the homeless and put them in jail.

I remember Rudy Giuliani once proposed this in NYC. Well, at least Rudy got rid of all of those homeless dudes who would stand by the curb and scrub your car windshield. I think Rudy threw those guys in jail too.

Jail. Thats the best way to get rid of the homeless.

The Rockets and the City Of Houston are working together on moving all those misplaced individuals as we speak.

You can't throw people in jail for being poor and homeless. But, it isn't a bad idea for the city to make an ordinace that they have to sleep in shelter, but then again if they break it what can they do? throw them in jail where they get free food and shelter?
There is no quick solution to this problem.

They're building the practice facility on that old park where all the homeless stay now. Everyone there is gonna have to relocate.

But yeah, "The Rockets & Fannie Mae" should build them all houses.

    I was being sarcastic.

Honestly, unless that park is heavily guarded or fortified, you can't force people out of the park. Whoever oversees that park has to get nasty in terms of enforcing a no homeless policy. Otherwise, the homeless will still be there. I just can't see someone spending the resources to guard that park 24 hours a day.

I wish the "Rockets & The Fanny Mae" would build me a house in the Woodlands.

Excellent points, Rivaldo. What's worse is that they're being forcibly moved so the corporate suits who buy Rox tix don't even have to see them. The rich need their consciences unchallenged.

that's cold hard reality.:( for whatever the reason they are there and for whatever the reason you are not among them. but don't forcibly remove them, don't put them into jail. that won't solve anything. help if you can, or just accept them as part of the society.

I think they banned that homeless crap by the signals here in Dallas. Don't see many of them homey folks anymore.

When you talk about the homeless we are talking about our 'Bothers' and 'Sisters'! Before we make any consideration on their behalf we should say "There but for the Grace OF God go I". then we can have a human approach to assisting them if they wish, many do not want our help and have chosen this lifestyle, while others are forced into this situation either by physical circumstances or by mental condition. It is a very sad state that in our American Society that we find so many in every tolerant City. The Park is about to be remade and it should be done in a manner as not to be a suitable place for them to gather at. The City and Rockets should ensure that they have several alternatives to go to and it should be only the choice of the homeless as to where they go.

More like Tough Love Conservative. So, its compassionate to leave these people on the street?? Especially, when the majority of them are intoxicated with drugs or alcohol??

The homeless there are being pushed into Midtown, which of course gets all the yuppies who just bought $300k townhomes there up in arms. Midtown townhome buyers have to be among the stupidest and most hypocritical people I've ever met.

Gee guys, you didn't think that by buying a house yards from the 3rd Ward, on the edge of America's 4th largest city's downtown would, would expose you to urban decay, crime, and the homeless?

Naaawwwwwww - those developers sold it all as "vibrant," "redeveloped," and "edgy."

They get what they deserve - people who have lived in the inner city all their lives are being driven out b/c of the spiraling property tax rates that come w/ the trendy townhome infusion. Hell, there are people who are constantly railing about the Star of Hope - wanting to close it & shuffle off all those homeless just b/c they are "exposed" to them while walking to the damn baseball game...
