I've been to a bunch of baseball games in my life and I've never had one hit within 20 seats of me, much less been able to get a hand on one. (In Little League I did get a foul ball once, but I had to run for it and knock a few guys over because if you took it to the concession stand you got a free snowcone... but I'm not counting that one.) Any of you folks catch one or let one slip through your fingers?
I'm the same way. As many baseball games as I've been to, I've never come close to catching anything.
I've been to a Major League Baseball game in which the foul ball went about 10 feet directly over my head. I've caught some Tee shirts at Rockets games, I don't know what that counts for... Kam stole all mine 2 seasons ago.
I went to an Express game the 14th, and my friends and I were talking to one of the beer kiosk guys, who was telling us that if we just waited until after the first inning, that it's a pretty safe bet that you could grab closer (and shadier) seats without getting called out for it... As soon as we walk away from the kiosk and chickened out (went back to our ticketed seats) a foul ball gets knocked RIGHT TO that kiosk guy... Though had we still been standing there, we would have gotten knocked in the back of our heads with the ball. So I suppose it wasn't so bad.
I was at Fenway back in 03 watching the Angels play the RedSox. Nomar and Troy Glaus hit one over my head. I was sitting on the Green Monster.
One time I was sitting in the section that juts out into the left field foul area at MMP. A line drive comes screaming in and hits this little kid in the chest two rows in front of me, rolls up his body and goes over his shoulder and falls down behind his back into his seat. The lady sitting in front of me reached down, grabbed it out of his seat and kept it. What a b****. Luckily after the initial shock of being hit by a baseball the kid was fine.
i went to the dodgers and As game last wednesday we had the first row in left field the As hit two homeruns the first one was caught/fell by the guy sitting about 6 seats to the right of me the second HR was caught by the guy sitting 5 seats to my left with the railing right in front there is hardly any room to try to scoot over and catch a ball... closest i've ever been to either a foul/HR ball at a game
I was sitting along the first row along the first base line at an Astros game a few years back. A line shot foul ball came by and it didn't look like it was coming anywhere near my section. This kid two seats over from me leaned over the rail a little, stuck his glove out and grabbed it. Probably the most awesome fan catch I've ever seen.
I got 2 homerun baseballs (and a couple more tossed up by players) during batting practice at the Astrodome in the late 90's. Used to love getting to the dome early for those $5 general admission outfied seats.
I caught Bobby Estelalla's 40th career home run (Wohooo!) at Minute Maid Park, standing in Left Center above the Visitor's bullpen. He hit another one that game, and it went right by me....
We got 7 last year at the RR express games... Only 2 from foul balls and 5 from the first baseman tossing it to my boys at the end of the inning. Our seats are front row next to dugout..3rd base side. DD
I "almost" caught the first ever HR at Enron Field. It was an exhibition against the Yankees and the ball landed about two rows in front of me. I think Ron Stone, Sr. actually wound up catching the ball.
At one Astros game last season I got 3 balls. I was behind the Pirates bench and they kept throwing the balls at this kid during the 7th-9th inning. I was sitting with my girlfriend at the time and my brother and his friend were in the Crawford Boxes. Well, anyways, the boy got one ball and he kept letting the other balls go through his HANDS, we are talking a young kid here 6-8? I got booed at the game and I was called many names. I looked at it this way, I've been to many games myself and NEVER once have gotten a ball. Getting 3 balls in 3 innings in a success for me. Note: I was 3 rows behind the bench and they kept bouncing the balls off the concrete of their dugout.
stack24, where are you?!? i almost caught a foul ball during the 04 all-star game. however, cheivious minnefield showed some mad box out skills with his elbow in my chest and ended up catching it.
I think it was the 18th inning game against the Braves. I wanna say the guy caught Berkman's HR and Burke's HR.
