I'm trying to get my son's guitar play recorded on his PC for CHEAP- Can anyone tell me the best way? I've read about M-Audio, PCI, soundcards, interfaces, and software (cakewalk) And I am confused. I am going to the local Guitar Center today but I would like to understand a little before. thanks
Depending on how much you want to spend, I'd highly recommend the Line 6 UX interface. You can get the one-channel for about $130 (meaning it records only one thing at a time and has one input as opposed to the two-channel version that is about $70 more). It's a very simple USB interface for the computer. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/249700/ Line 6 has GREAT sounding guitar sounds in it making it really easy to get great guitar sounds without an amp. It is literally what many of the major studios use to get guitar sounds on the fly and it is ridiculous that it is this cheap, but that is the way Line 6 has always been. This also has the bass and vocal preamps in it as well if he wants to do more. You'll still need some sort of recording software. If you have a Mac, you can use Garage Band and it works great. It comes free with newer versions of OS X. On PC, I'm not sure because I don't use them, but there are a number of decent, inexpensive multi-track recording software options out there.
Jeff- Thanks alot, he is on PC- I am looking at Sonar Home Studio 4 (cakewalk) M-Audio Pro-Tools- heard of them? I want him to be able to be able to lay down the rhythm and then lead- will that work? Thanks
