They used to run about $300-$400 for a "thorough" one a few years ago, not sure about now. No idea who's good down there (assuming you live in Houston) They'll probably miss something no matter how thorough they are, but it's a good idea to get one done anyway.
I had a house inspected by Brad Leland last year. I feel he did a thorough inspection. He took pictures, documented everythig and burned it all on a disc for me which was a nice touch. http://www.houstonhomeinspector.net/
mine cost $400 - i used him on 2 houses too so it was $800. there were cheaper ones, but my guy was very thorough - got a 15 page report w/ about a dozen photos - i walked the house w/ him both times and we spent a couple hours there. if anyone in austin needs an inspector doyle williamson is the man. he is also a blackbelt in muay-thai for whatever thats worth.
Another vote for Fox Inpspection Group. Only had one done but I was happy with it. Very thorough and they send PDF with all pics and issues.
Price aside, ask what sort of insurance they provide if they miss anything. I assume you need it to buy a house.
