Since we have so many gun/rifle experts here I have a couple questions.. What do people recommend for home defense? shotguns 1. type of shotgun (12ga/20ga) is there others? 2. type of shells? 3. do they sell non-lethal to civilians? do you recommend it? 4. how do you keep it secure but accessible? 5. any tips/hints for first time owners? 6. Legal - I've heard if you point it at someone in your house you could sued even if that person was committing a crime? or even more crazy if you wound someone defending yourself they can sue you. that has me thinking about 1 Non-lethal shot (warning) backed up with regular shots? I want to protect myself/my family but I also worry about the legal ramifications. what do you think? J
i dont know what type of gun or shell you need, but when i tried to shoot a 12 gauge at my friends house, the slide you **** the gun with felt like a brick, so i couldnt fire fast at all. secure but accessble, i m guessing get a lock on the trigger, but keep the keys around your neck or something, or put the gun in a gun case and keep the keys around your neck. first timers?? umm practice cause if you never shot a gun before it feels pretty crazy, and if you dont know a lot about your gun and emergency comes up you might be screwed if you are not familiar with your gat. as for the last question, i think you cant shoot them unless they are in your house.
1.) Get a 12 gauge. Either a Remington 870, Mossberg 500, or a Benelli Nova. All from 200-$350 depending on how you want them configured. All pump action. You don't want a semi-auto that might jam at the wrong time if this is what you're going with for home defense. 2.) The Rem & Mossy will shoot 2-3/4 & 3 inch shells. The slightly more expensive Benelli will handle larger 3.5 inch shells as well. Home defense only? Get some 00 Buck. Again, this is for home defense, not dove hunting. 3.) Dude, you are in Texas (I assume). OF COURSE they sell non-lethal to "civilians." 4.) Keep a trigger lock on it & keep the key on you ro somewhere secure. Somewhere where the kids can't get to it, but to where you can get to it in time if things go bad. 5.) Go to American Shooting Centers off of Hwy. 6 after you buy it & practice with it on the shotgun stand. 6.) Dude, you are in Texas (I assume). If ANYONE is IN your house (actually even your yard depending on the circumstances here) - especially at night - threatening you or your family, feel free to unload into them. I can't remember the last time a grand jury indicted someone here for shooting a criminal tresapsser inside their home. Their have even been instances where homeowners have shot people trying to steal their cars out of the driveway & they haven't been indicted. These things carry a few shells. If you really wanna warn them, just fire a standard round up into the ceiling (so long as there's no one above you on another floor) - drywall is easily repaired. Chances are most criminals would run at the sound of you racking the shotgun alone.
what are some other good guns for home defense. been thinking about getting one i would rather have a pistol instead of a shotgun. the one i have been looking at is the walther p99.
Florida just passed a new gun which allows you to shoot whenever and wherever you feel threatened. So consider a move if you are trigger happy. Where is ROXRAN?
Hey distence I did the whole hangun vs. shotgun arguement and it was pretty much no contest that the shotgun is the best HD weapon available. easy to aim/shoot the distinct pumping sound to scare aware most people it seems the handguns need more practice to learn how to aim/shoot. J
Get a handgun. Like a mini .380. Keep it under your bed, but keep the clip seperate. That way in case something happens, you can toss or hide the gun when the authorities come. A shotgun isn't the easiest to hide. You know you can now legally carry a gun in your car in Texas without a permit. I love Texas!
I have a Remington 870 but I would recommend a smll caliber handgun for defense maybe a 22 or 25 but not a shotgun.
For home security a 12 or 20 gauge is the best, because like said above the "cocking" action would scare the living hell out of just about any criminal... it is also easy to fire and aim while pistols take some finesse.
it is also harder to shoot yourself (or your kids to shoot themselves if you have them) with a shotgun.
Yes, many people are killed by their own pistols. Go with a shotgun, I like Remington pumps and an 870 Express Magnum will go for $215 or less brand-new. Good thing about Rem's, you can find parts and accessories in large numbers anywhere firearms are retailed:Chokes, barrels, magazines, furniture(stocks and fore ends)...etc Best thing about the 870 is it's reliability and lightning fast slide--the most popular, tested, and owned pump shotgun ever. I still have mine for home-defense with the plug taken out of the magazine and a shorter barrel. It used to be my Dove/Pheasant/Clay Shooting gun and It can be easily reconfigured for anything I want to use it for, i.e., back-up bird gun when the Citori needs a nap.
I don't think that is true. I believe its only if you are traveling somewhere, like on a trip. I don't think you can carry a gun in your car without a permit if you are just running around town or going to the gym or something.
Does anyone know if they make non-lethal rounds for the 20 gauge? I've seen them for the 12 but nothing for the 20. If your planning on a woman using it a 20 gauge probably makes more sense. whats the difference with the different rounds? buckshot 00? or 000 birdshot? - I guess used for birds? small pellets? slugs? - solid shot? whats best for your home and why? which of these has less "kick" and how do you know? I've looked for this info online but it gets kind of confusing with unfamilar terminology? J
I like the idea of non-lethal rounds, I was almost shot by my own family because I forgot my keys and tried to come in the side door late one night (AFTER RINGING THE DOORBELL) I dont know what to think of guns in the house, but I think they could get you in more trouble than keep you out of.. I do understand why people have them so it's a moot point..
I guess since I live in Cali the legality sounds soo much more different. You can own a shotgun but it has to be a certain length if you want to take it to an outdoor range. It is only allowed to hold 3 shots at a time which is plenty for HD but I dont understand why the restriction. Is it the same in TX? What really stinks is even if you just defended yourself in a gun fight at home the person can sue you for damages (civil). With any kind of weapon I think you need some training on safety/use as I am trying to learn as much as I can before really deciding on what I want. J
Jerry: Nice shotgun. Cop: Thanks. Jerry: Clean as a whistle. George: You could eat of that shotgun. Jerry: What is that, a 12 gauge? Cop: Yeah. Jerry: 12 gauge. Seems to be the most popular gauge. George: My favorite. Jerry: Mine too, love the 12 gauge. George: Makes the 11 gauge look like a cap pistol. I'd go with the 12 gauge.
