Johnny Depp Says U.S. Is Like a Stupid Puppy
Wed Sep 3, 6:32 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - Hollywood star Johnny Depp (news) said on Wednesday the United States was a stupid, aggressive puppy and he would not live there until the political climate changed.

The 40-year-old actor, who stars in the "Pirates of the Caribbean," told the German news magazine Stern he was happier staying in the south of France with his wife, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis (news), and their two children.

"America is dumb, it's like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," he said.

"My daughter is four, my boy is one. I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out," said the star of the off-beat films "Edward Scissorhands" and "Dead Man."

Depp slammed George W. Bush's administration for its criticism of French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites).

"I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots," he told Stern.

Just his opinion, Mr. C. Opened his mouth, answered a question. If you want him to "love it or leave it," well... he left. A lot of people are disappointed in the way our country has changed; I don't think that makes them stupid.

I guess you could always boycott him. But he was hilarious in "Pirates."

    Agree.
He should get a nomination for "Pirates", imo. Brilliant work.

Well, now I won't feel so bad about not going to see his next movie....

Seriously, this is something that is not new in that we have a celebrity using their fame to shoot off their mouth. Yipee.

He hasn't really left unfortunately, he is still making millions of dollars selling his movies to stupid Americans, and working with American companies.

Really, if he wants to cirticize the war or country, that is fine. But if someone is going to attack my country and call it stupid without even supporting it, then I will have a response for him, whether he is left or right wing.

If he's so smart, maybe he should run for office like Arnold and fix this place.

"Pirates" was the first time that I have seen Depp as one who could actually win an Oscar. Brilliant work, he was absolutely hilarious and did a fantastic job.

That being said, do people who aren't conservatives take what actors say about politics seriously? Every time there is an actor (other than Arnold) who talks about politics, the conservatives pitch a fit about their statements, not seeming to realize that the rest of us see that it was Depp who made these comments and brush them off as fluff from an actor. Actually, this is the problem I have with Arnold, I just can't take him seriously when he tries to talk about policy. At least Reagan didn't run for the presidency while he still had a movie in theaters.

He answered many questions in the interview. A few were about his movie, some were about his wife, and a few were about American politics. He answered them. The "puppy" comment was pulled from the article, and is getting play in America because it's a hot-button issue here. After all, neutering and puppy mills are pretty controversial now.

It's not like he organized a giant rally to announce his opinions. Just because he's an entertainer doesn't mean he isn't entitled to his thoughts.

Hell, Schwarzennegger, an avowed entertainer, is running for governor.

Americans who travel abroad and speak against Bush shouldn't be allowed to come back.

and their families here should be gathered up in the middle of the night and disposed of

we can't have acts of sedition. we need a law. maybe an Alien and Sedition Act. because you can't have people disagreeing with the government.

I'll use this logic next time Jerry Falwell says something stupid.

"He answered many questions in the interview. The (blank) comment was pulled from the article. etc."

that was the original Sedition portion of the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798, an ignoble moment in early American governance.

it's scary to know that John Assmunch has probably never pondered the lessons of the Alien and Sedition acts, and the battle fought over them 200 years ago.

I didn't say Depp's thoughts were good or bad. Just that his opinions in an article about his movie aren't that big a deal.

He's an actor. It's not like he's the head of a giant organization with millions of members.
