Hold tournaments for the 8th seed in each conference?

    7 teams make the playoffs each conference.

    For the 8th seed, hold a single elimination tournament for the remaining 8 teams. Would be awesome, would only take 3 days worth of games. The whole thing will take a week. Then make the first round best of 5 again to compensate for time (or not).

    Adds drama, adds excitement, gives fans of bottom dwellers something to hope for other than the draft.

    The competition wouldn't be competitive because lottery teams want a shot at a higher draft pick instead of getting steamrolled by Miami/OKC in 4 games.

    You could say that the higher you finish in the tournament, the better your odds are in the draft lottery.

    No. Thats being punitive on tankers just for the sake of it.

    8th seeds historically arent successful, specially in a 7-game series. Why enter a big parade just to get stomped in the 1st round.

    Also, OVER HALF the teams in the league already make the playoffs. Getting an 8th seed already seems like its "backing in" to the playoffs. Its almost like a mediocre team in the East has to get put in the playoffs. The Rockets were the 9th team for 3 straight years, and though its very disappointing, no one got THAT bent out of shape about it. Probably need to KEEP OUT those 8th seeds more than include them in.

    If the final spot was a 6th seed, yes itd make some sense cuz its a more honorable position to shoot for

    You could order the draft position (or lottery odds) in the order of best to worst of the tournament. That would get rid of tanking plus make the tournament competitive.

    Something needs to be done. More than half of the teams in the NBA make the playoffs.. that's ridiculous.

    Getting out of the 7th seed is no guarantee for a good pick. Since it's single elimination, anything can happen. What if you lose your first game in the tournament? It's pretty much the same as getting the 14th pick.
