In the NHL, to be considered a great player, one must be a have great numbers in scoring and assists. A great player in the NHL, thus, is awarded a scoring title based on these two factors. I, therefore, submit that the NBA should consider assists AND points when determining the scoring champion. This will then give credibility to the award, as a sign of great scoring ability and unselfishness.

I have computed the following (averages):

    Last Points Assists Total
    Iverson, 31.1 4.7 35.8
    Stackhouse, 29.6 5.0 34.6
    Bryant, 29.6 4.9 34.5
    Marbury, 24.4 7.1 31.5
    Payton, 22.5 8.4 30.9
    Walker, 23.1 5.1 28.2
    Oneal, 27.7 4.1 27.7
    Carter, 27.7 3.8 27.7
    Webber, 27.4 4.1 27.4
    Mcgrady, 26.9 4.4 26.9
    Rose, 20.8 5.4 26.2
    Francis, 19.7 6.2 25.9

Although this analysis shows that Iverson should win the scoring title (as he would with just points), players like Payton, Marbury, and Francis gain ground, and have a shot to win the scoring title with unselfish play.

Therefore, how would you tweak Francis' positon on this team in order for him to win the scoring title and be considered "one of the greats?" I know that winning championships is the point (for the Rockets), but consider just the scoring title (assists and points). Are these, in essence, factors mutually exclusive?

P.S. How can I make the list of players/stats into a cleaner table? Thanks...

I could pass this to Mango for an assist, but I'd rather say 'wrong forum' (even w/ the Francis aside).
