my cairn terrier, chico, has been getting hives lately from an allergic reaction to something. seperately, I was in houston for the 4th and he got fleas on him, which he is allergic to. I gave him a flea bath and they are all gone but he did manage to chew himself up pretty good after all the fleas were gone. but he is no longer itching the flea bites. I am throwing this in here because I am wondering if something else could have got on him that is still in the apartment that is too small for me to see. anyhow about the hives, he started developing them on saturday night and I had to take him to the vet sunday afternoon because they were getting a little worse. while we were at the vet the hives worsened in the hour that we were there and they were all over his body and he was itching like crazy. they gave him a benadryl shot and a steroid shot and he got better. the vet really had no clue what could have caused it. this evening he started developing hives again. it started in the same was...from one little spot then spreading. I think I have stopped it from getting worse by giving him a couple benadryl, but it was getting worse pretty rapidly. the only thing different is that he was not itching like crazy. also, tonight my gf got a hive on her forearm and she said her chest was starting to itch. I have been itching a little bit since this situation has developed but no visual signs of anything. can anyone think of any small insect or anything that could have got on him that we can't see. we have had a very high mold count up here in austin lately but I don't think that's it. any help would be great.
Hives can sometimes be caused by food. Eat anything out of the usual that you also happened to feed your dog recently?
the only thing out of the ordinary that I have given him was white bread as a treat. normally I give him wheat. I haven't given him any since I saw the vet on sunday, so I don't think it is the cause. she didn't seem to think it was the white bread, but the hives did get worse while we were there and I was giving him white bread as a treat when we were there. I really have no clue what in the world could be causing this. he has had food allergies before (cairns are very prone to skin allergies) that caused redness and itching but no hives. I'm pretty sure it was from the dog bones we were giving him. so we switched and problem solved.
If your girlfriend got hives too then it is probably something in your immediate environment. Hives aren't contagious, she wouldn't get them from the dog. That also leads me to believe that the problem isn't in its diet, because then why would your girlfriend get them too? Maybe you could try allergen sprays on your floors and furniture. I would also check to see if the dog has been doing anything irregular recently.
One of my dogs got them when we changed his heartworm meds. He didn't react well to the kind you put between the shoulders.
well we took him to the vet and she just prescribed us some prednisone. we'll see how that works out. I think it is making him sleepy and lazy too. hopefully, I don't have to give him this stuff too much longer.
