You remember when Hakeem had issues with the management about his injury status and there where rumors about his trade availability? There was even a stretch of time where the team won like 10 games in a row without Hakeem and the fans where thinking that the Rockets would be better off trading him? Hmmm..Remember?

A thread about the background http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=89352

There was a long flight to Japan that became a make-up session the beginning of the next season.....then within 2 years...a championship.

This why you don't listen to fans........they are SHORT-SIGHTED.

The Olajuwon era predates probably half the posters on this board. Still remember my favorite shirt in elementary was my 85-86 Rockets WCC shirt.

Speaking of the old days I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that Dikembe used to present huge match-up problems for Hakeem. The Rockets did not want to meet Denver in the playoffs in the year when Denver beat Seattle, and they breathed a sigh of relief when Utah knocked them out of the playoffs. And now all these years later Deke is wearing a Rockets jersey.

I think they were alot happier at the prospect of facing Denver rather than Seattle. Talk about match-up problems...

Yeah, remember when Olajuwon called Charlie Thomas a "coward." That was crazy.

Exactly. You don't earn a reputation as the fiercest defensive player in the game unless you are in top condition and play your a$$ off every second you are on the court. Nobody ever questioned Dream's intensity on the court.

I've never seen Tmac sustain that type of concentration and fire for more than a few plays. If ever.

Winning changes the aspects of everything doesn't it? How much heart did Dream have before the championships? As the OP is saying, people were wondering if he's good for the team. It's ubsurd what people start thinking at times. There are certain good players that are cancers to teams. Tracy isn't one of them.

I mean let's imagine *IF* Tracy can lead us to the 'ship. Let's just humor ourselves...is he still heartless? A quitter? No fire? etc.? He has heart and fire. Just b/c someone's not a spaz like apparently half this bbs is, doesn't mean he doesn't have fire. Look at many of the ads and pictures of him on the internet in a Rockets uniform. He's yelling, pumped up, etc.

It's easy to kick someone when they are down. They guy gives it his all come playoff time. His team ends up folding in game 7s (sometimes not excluding himself). Yet every playoff series, he comes and gives it everything. What happens when he finally tastes some post season success?

I wonder what this board will say if he can finally win a series like he deserves. Oh, I know...it'll be because of Yao.

Wasn't it exactly Hakeem's heart they were questioning when they accused him of faking an injury???

You show us your hidden agenda right at the end.

It won't be because of Yao. It won't be because of T-Mac.

We won't get out of the first round with this core.

The majority are short sighted ;) There are some that take more than what the media give them into consideration.

I didn't know that there was a time when Hakeem wasn't trusted.. so thanks for the history lesson!

Haha, it's just the frustration of a lot of the "stuff" I read through here, so forgive me there. I am a big fan of Yao's.

I disagree with you on the 1st round thing though. I believe this team can get far. I still believe.

Good find. I started following the Rockets in the late 90s, so I never knew this about Hakeem. Also interesting to note that he was somewhat of a knucklehead early in his career. At least Tmac doesn't fit that type of character.

He was faking an injury......he wanted a new contract....and when the Rockets refused to negotiate he said...and I quote from a conversation I had with Steve Patterson when he was running the Aeros Hockey team.....

    Hakeem said...

    "Fine, my leg hurts then."

And he was suspended by the team, and the players union and league heard both sides, and upheld the suspension.

Then the plane ride, the 14 game winning streak that year with Hakeem missing most of it with a legitimate injury and the very next year they started 15-0 and won the championship.

    Yep yep...good times.
