If many of you do research on the Internet, you can really appreciate what a great tool search engines are. If you know what Usenet/newsgroups are, you can also appreciate that if someone could archive all the messages posted on Usenet, you'd have one hell of a historical archive. The search engine site known as Google.com has archived some of the "firsts" ever posted on Usenet. For example, the "first mention of AIDS", "first mention of Microsoft", a post made by some guy named Jeff Bezos requesting for people to join his startup company (Jeff Bezos is the founder of Amazon.com for those among us that are clueless :)), the first post from an AOL account (die, scum!), the post by Linus Torvalds announcing the new OS he had in mind (which eventually became Linux), the first mention of Star Wars Episode 6, first mention of a compact disc, announcement of the first cell phone, etc.

A lot of this stuff goes back to the early 80's.

If you're a nostalgia hunter like me, you can appreciate it in a geeky sorta way...

    Anyway, enjoy :

Or how about just Deja.com. I'm still pissed at the bastards for buying Deja out and shutting down their archives to only 8 months for about half a year.

The Internet has been around since the late 60's - early 70's. It started sa ARPAnet. :)

Most people equate the Web to the Internet. The Web just came into existence around 1992. The Internet was once a tool for research and so valuable a resource until commercialization has screwed that up a bit. It's still very valuable, but now it just happens to have a lot more uses for it. Some that I wish never occurred. :(
