    I'm glad Carl is ok.

Memo to Landry, don't drive on the other side of 45.

I immediately thought of this incident (below). Anyone else remember any injustice to our heroes?

    Carjacking injures player for Rockets

    By S.K. BARDWELL
    Staff

Mario Elie of the Houston Rockets suffered minor injuries when he was carjacked in southwest Houston early Wednesday, police said.

Elie told police that about 2:20 a.m. he had stopped at a red light in the 3700 block of Chimney Rock, at the intersection with the Southwest Freeway, when two men approached his car.

Elie said one man came to the driver's side of his red 1993 Series 300 Mercedes convertible, and the second went to the passenger side.

The man on the driver's side pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and ordered Elie out of the car, he told police. The top was down on the car, and Elie said when he glanced at the second man, the first one struck him on top of his head several times.

Elie said when he got out of the car, the two men got in and sped away south on Chimney Rock, turning left at the light and heading up the ramp to the Southwest Freeway.

Elie flagged down a passing taxi, police said, and told the driver, "Let's get out of here."

Elie had the cab pull over at a convenience store at Hillcroft and Windswept about a mile and a half away, where he called police.

Police said Elie had bumps on his head, but did not go to a hospital.

Harris County Sheriff's Department deputies recovered Elie's car late Wednesday morning in the 9000 block of Sweetwater, in north Harris County.

Police asked anyone with information to call 713-308-0700.

Maybe Rockets and people in general should stop going out after 2 am.

    Ex-Rocket Maxwell mum about incident

    By S.K. BARDWELL
    Staff

Former Houston Rocket and San Antonio Spur Vernon Maxwell apparently was attacked and beaten early Monday by two men, but he would not talk to Houston police about the incident.

Residents of the area near the intersection of Rosedale and Chenevert, just south of downtown, told police Maxwell was in one of several expensive vehicles that gathered at the intersection early Monday morning.

At 1:38 a.m., a witness called police to report two men were robbing and beating some of the others. Police said gunshots apparently were fired, but the shots may have been directed at the witness, not those involved in the melee. No one was hit, police said.

Officers responding to the call stopped two vehicles near the scene that matched two of those described by the witness. Maxwell was not in either.

One of the vehicles - the one Maxwell had been seen in earlier - contained what police believe is mar1juana and three possibly counterfeit $20 bills. Assistant Chief Jimmie Dotson of the Houston Police Department said it was unclear whether the items were in the vehicle at the same time Maxwell was.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken into custody for questioning but no charges had been filed against either man Monday afternoon, said Dotson.

When officers searched the scene of the incident, they found Maxwell's identification and cellular phone, but not Maxwell himself.

However, police said, Maxwell and another man did show up at Hermann Hospital where, under false names, both were treated for minor injuries apparently inflicted in a fight. Maxwell refused to talk with officers at the hospital and was released.

By Monday afternoon, the investigation involved officers from HPD narcotics and robbery divisions. Police said it was likely the U.S. Treasury Department would be asked to analyze the bills.

Dotson said neither Maxwell nor any of the four men who had been in the vehicle with him would file complaints or give statements in connection with the incident.

County Court-at-Law Judge Don Jackson sentenced Maxwell in January to 90 days in jail after he failed to meet court orders on a mar1juana possession charge. Maxwell's lawyers are appealing the action.

Maxwell played for the Houston Rockets for 5 1/2 seasons before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. They released him in 1996, and he went to the San Antonio Spurs, who released him last month.

The former guard has a history of problems with drugs, women and the law.

In October 1995 he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of mar1juana possession and was ordered to complete drug rehabilitation and submit to regular drug testing.

In the summer of 1995 Maxwell was arrested after a Houston police officer pulled him over in the city's nightclub district for running a red light. Slightly more than a gram of mar1juana was found in his 1995 Mercedes convertible, police said.

While he lived in Houston, Maxwell also was arrested once for waving a handgun at another motorist and for fighting with a nightclub bouncer.

Maxwell also has had ongoing court battles involving a paternity suit by one woman, and a civil suit filed by another woman who claimed Maxwell gave her genital herpes.

why would Max even want to talk to HPD?

This is further proof that Houston loved the Rockets back then more than they do now.

Sure Max and Mario got beat up, but nobody shot them.
Those criminals couldn't live with themselves knowing that these are Clutch City heroes. That's what probably saved them, that they saved the city.
