My dad, an HISD teacher for the past 37 years, cracked up laughing when I told him Rod Paige got the nod for Secretary of Education from Bush. Since Paige took over HISD in 1994, he has been a joke in the district.

He increased mandated class time for taking the TAAS test (while decreasing time for other classes), punished principals who refused to adopt 100% of the standards and gave himself a couple of pay raises while vetoing pay increases for teachers AT THE SAME TIME. In fact, I remember him once being quoted in the Chronicle after giving himself a pay raise the same day he vetoed teacher pay increases saying, "This is a tough job and I deserve to be paid for it" or something to that effect.

My dad said, "Well, at least he's out of Houston." [IMG]

Gosh, when I read the topic, I just about started laughing too . . . what a terrible pick? Why Paige???!??

We'll see if he can run America's education stuff as well as he ran HISD . . . let's hope not . . .

Say what you will, but I consider this pick a huge step for all Paigekind. You know, there has never been a Paige hold a Cabinet-Level position in our Government. And Paiges are underrepresented in corporations, as well. We've got a long way to go before discrimination against Paiges is a thing of the past.

mrpaige: I think you would probably do a better job than Rod, but I guess it's "In Rod We Trust" from here on out. [IMG]

My mother told me a long time ago Paige would get the nod (she also is with HISD).

The guy is an illiterate idiot. What a shame...

The woman who will probably replace him (Minsberger or something?) might do a better job for HISD, but nationally this is rediculous.

Almost as bad as a mediocre governor from a piss-ant state like Arkansas winning the presidency.

This probably falls into the category of he can't do a lot of harm, since our education system is based primarily on the state and district level.

Besides, I hear the education system in Houston is improving already. [IMG]

    Freak,

Have you not anything usefull to do?

Your one liner - while loaded with keen insight and great wit - has nary a thing to do with Rod Paige.

dc: I tend to agree with you on this one. To be very honest, it's the same reason why I don't care much about Ashcroft's appointment even though I am on the opposite end of the spectrum from him in terms of philosophy.

Paige is an idiot without question but our school board determines how we run our schools, not the federal government which is why I considered it such a ridiculous concept to campaign on education reform for president.

A new superintentent is a good thing for HIDS anyway.

Yep. Sort of like a crappy governor from a great state winning the Presidency without winning the popular vote!

    Have a nice day! [IMG]
