just moving this to a more appropriate thread.
I did not get into the Vivrant thing
So I did not pick up his album
I'm not big on the super materialistic thing
hip hop is in a lull . . . nothing is grabbing
right now. . . so I kinda of scour the net
    for new stuff. . . .

lol, yeah, that quote did lead me on a tangent [IMG].

Not exactly new, but in terms of not materialistic and not old I've enjoyed Talib Kwelli's album, and The Roots' "Things Fall Apart" more than anything else, lately.

    Talib Kweli is tight.

    Blackalicious is also pretty good.

    LIl Zane is nice.

    Dr. Dre is great.

Prodigy is also pretty damn good.

Dead Prez is a really good group, check out songs like "Bigger than hip hop", "african", or "police state"

anomos is a good underground rapper that I found on audiogalaxy, but he only has a couple songs out.

bone thugs n harmony is one of the best rap groups ever. Some of my favorites of theirs include "Crossroads" and "first of the month"

mos def is also another good, recent rapper who has more to talk about than 'bling, bling'

I always considered Prodigy an industrial act rather than hip hop. I, admittedly, don't know much about hip hop, but it is something that has interested me for some time.

I remember the first time I heard one of their cuts, all I could say was "damn, finally something new and different". I'd rank them up there with PM Dawn as being something absolutely revolutionary to hip hop/rap. Bone Thugs is one of my most favorite rap groups of all time.

    Jeff,

Prodigy is one of the members of the duo, Mobb Deep.

Prodigy, the band, is fun to listen to however.

And, San Quinn is coming out with a new album called "The Mighty Quinn"... www.friscostreetshow.com

I'm not into the mainstream rap such as Eminem, Snoop, Dr.Dre... I prefer to stay underground.

See! I told you I didn't know much about hip hop! [IMG]

I just realized that the industrial band is THE Prodigy, not just "Prodigy". That clears it up.

    Jeff:

I didn't like hip hop at all until two years ago. Thought it was just full of people drinking 40's and wearing gold chains... like is often featured on MTV and BET. But I had a black suitemate who thought I was being close minded, so he took me to a Roots concert.

HOLY CRAP! They were probably the best live group I've ever seen in any genre. Went home, bought 3 of their CD's, then checked out some other groups like Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, and Talib Kwelli. Like all of that stuff. Checked out some older stuff, like De La Soul... like that too. I still don't like most of the extremely popular stuff, though.

If most of what you've heard has been the odd song on the radio, you should really check some of the underground stuff out. I actually like a lot of progressive hip hop better than anything else, since it seems the artists actually have more to say, alot like rock in the 60's.

I like some trip hop and acid stuff that I've heard from friends - mostly house music from NYC. I do like some of it but, because most of it lacks the same type of musical melody structure traditional rock and pop does, it will be hard for me to be a big fan. I'm a sucka for sweet hooks. The dillema of hip-hop, at least for me, is how good the beats are that accompany the tired, negative materialism that so often come with the package. I am glad someone one brought up Q-Tip's "Vivrant Thing." The video is kind of standard Hype Williams booty shakin' and the lyrics are pretty boring and, given Q-Tip's past output, reactionary and disapointing. But I still like the song. Then I did the Rolling Stones test and I got over the dillema of worrying about the social content of the lyrics. The beat, the groove and the texture of a song trumps everything else. A song like "Stray Cat Blues" by the Stones talks about pretty sordid things..luring 13 year olds and corrupting them. I don't approve of that as a way to act. But the song rocks. When U2 briefly made groundbreaking and brave music about five to ten years ago (they are back to acting like Jesus now), one of their common mantras was "taste is the enemy of art." I think that is a perfect way to look at hip-hop, or any artform. I object to, say, Ememinem not because he is saying all of these mean, or uncouth things..I just find him boring. His (Dre's) beats sound like the backing for a bad Nintendo game.

-Elvis, who really likes Lil' Mo's "Superwoman" at the moment

    I completely agree
a lot of hiphop I listen too I may not
agree with the message but the beats are nice
and the flow is good. . . .a good production

Dre is getting tired and Em is boring and just
in my opinion overly hyped [remember the breif
stint of Horror Rap where everyone tried
to OUT sick each other. . . *it was a small
genre made up by people like Psycho C and bushwick bill*]
em seems to be the same type of thing . .
what can I say that will piss parents off and
get my name in the papers and sell records.

This jam on MTV2 by the Gorrila - Clint Eastwood
    is currently got me intrigued.

I listen to some Jay Z but he gets monotonous
as do Ja Rule and DMX - same sh*t different . .
    er very similar words.

Northern Rap - East Coast is coming back up
Southern Rap - while innovative 2~3 yrs ago is now stagnating
West Coast rap - honestly I don't know where it is now. . .em and dre dominating but i don't see much else. In fact it seems that East coast rap and west coast rap are closer than ever

[Biggie sounded like a west coast rapper IMO
in style of music and delivery . . . he did have East Coast lyrics though]

the best out there now In my Opinion
If some out asked be where to start . . .

    I would say. . . OUTKAST
    GOODIE MOB

I mostly only like the older stuff and more jazz-fusion-y.
    Tribe (first 3)
    De La (1 and 3)
    Digable Planets (Reachin')
    McSolaar (all [IMG] )
Guru's Jazzmatazz (vol 1)-- the music is wonderful, but damn he has no rhythm and his voice clashes with the music...

Then stuff like Branford Marsalis as Buckshot Lefonque (Music Evolution) which is more of a Jazz venture that incorporates hip-hop, along with Courtney Pine's Underground.

The Roots are allright, but I don't love them...

Of course you can go even farther back with Public Enemy...I like everything they did up to Apocalypse...but that is a different kind of music...

So, yeah, I think hip-hop is suffering from commercialization and the creative stagnation that comes with it.

Squatting on old bones and excrement and rusty iron, in a white blaze of heat, a panorama of naked idiots stretches to the horizon. Complete silence-their speech centers are destroyed-except for the crackle of sparks and the popping of singed flesh as they apply electrodes up and down the spine. White smoke of burning flesh hangs in the motionless air. A group of children have tied an idiot to a post with barbed wire and built a fire between his legs and stand watching with bestial curiosity as the flames lick his thighs. His flesh jerks in the fire with insect agony.

Gorillaz is Damon Albarn's baby. He is the lead singer of the great band, Blur. A bit of a departure here. There are a lot of cool dub and trippy effects on this one. Super record. Dan the Automater works the turntables and he could not be more talented. Damon and Dan the A. also worked with Del the Phunkehomosapien's awesome concept group and album from last year, Deltron 3030. Other cool things in this genre to look for are "The Return of the DJ" series but out by Ninja Tune records, I believe. Check this stuff out!
I agree with a previous post who lauded underground hip-hop. The possibilities of the form still are limitless. Less "bling-bling" and hoochies and more creativity, please.
