Does anybody have ideas about where i can get a job? I'm a high school senior trying to get money for college. Thanks
I used to work at Academy throughout high school, and the airport if you live in Houston. Typically "HMS HOST" will hire high school kids for their newspaper shops, and Starbucks.
I worked at Blockbuster when I was a high school senior, it worked well for me but not sure if Blockbuster will be around much longer. It was fun working in a video store, lots of interesting people and good conversations...if you like movies. Hours can be a drag but if you tell them from the very beginning to limit your hours, they will work with you.
Country club -- I worked as a poolside server my senior year of HS... management was Armenian, and they were very lenient and laid back. Housewives always tipped fat, and we were even able to eat and drink on the club's tab. Any golf-related jobs are also very easy... assistant in the golf shop, or even a caddy. Plus, hours line up with the school schedule... action really picks up in the afternoon/early evening as Mom's load all of their kids up and bring them to the pool. I also worked at Hungry's off Memorial Drive my junior year of HS, but it definitely wasn't as nice as the CC job. I did deliveries and waited tables... tips were okay, and it seemed like we were always overstaffed, so we never really raked in like guys at Pappadeaux or 'sitos (you can load up on a Fri/Sat night there). One more possibility... I umpired for Spring Branch Memorial Sports Association, and made $20/game in the little league division. We got free snacks from the concession stand, and the umpiring duties were VERY easy, and actually semi-entertaining. Only thing is, you take a bunch of flack from douchey parents. I actually met Jon Barry when he was with the Rockets... his son was an absolute beast baseball player. If I'm not mistaken, he was the MVP of the league.
If all else fails, bag groceries or deliver pizza (or both). Those are two jobs that you can always find openings, and with minimum wage so high now you can rack up some pretty decent savings while you don't have other bills to pay.
In high school I worked at Whataburger. A lot of people say they don't want to work fast food, but I thought it was fun. They worked with me on my hours. I also had a stint working in a hospital in the housekeeping department.
Those good old days are long gone. They run that place like a plantation. They are serious about sales and if you don't hit those numbers you are outta there.
I did both of these in high school, but times have changed. I don't think they have grocery baggers anymore because of all the self-check stations, and you take your life in your hands by delivering pizza these days. Grocery bagging used to be an art. I remember watching training videos at Safeway when I first started working there in high school. They would talk about building a base of cans on the outside of the bag, evenly distributing the heavy stuff, putting the eggs and bread on top, etc. They even used to have national competitions. Now with these plastic bags, it doesn't make much difference anymore.
I was a bagger when I was 16 (10 years ago). They still showed the videos to us even for using plastic bags ... you still do essentially the same thing as with the paper bags, they just don't hold as much. But yes, they do still have baggers at every store I go to (HEB, Kroger, Randalls). I get annoyed when they put 3 small items in one bag that could have obviously been combined with another bag. I started at 5.25 bagging ... with minimum wage up to 7.75 or whatever it is now, that would be great money for a HS kid if they got some hours.
Sad to hear, I remember working late on the weekends and putting on movies later in the evening instead of the crummy ads that had to run in a loop. We had some pretty cool managers that let us get away with murder during slow evenings, almost felt like just hanging out instead of actually working.
Don't remember what I got, but I remember getting $100 in tips on a typical Saturday. That may was well have been $1,000 to a high school kid.
Sales or some kind of job where you can get tips is the best way to go with no skillset. If you have the personality for it, I would say door-to-door sales of electric rates, satellite dishes, etc. Easy sales IMO.
