No actual announcement or anything like that, but the speculation in this article could lead to some changes in the format war:

I've pretty much committed to BR after purchasing a PS3 last weekend...here's hoping Warner sides with BR and the better format, from a specification aspect, wins out.

Consider me one of those that, while with interest to getting a next gen player, refuses to get one in the midst of the format war. My upconverting player gives me picture that's at least on par with broadcast High Def, I don't give two sh*ts about "interactive online extras and games", and the prices are still high enough that I'm not that eager to jump.

Maybe I get a PS3, but I'm in no hurry at all. Technologically superior to 360 but getting its bell rung as far as game play and game variety doesn't impress me. I'll stick to the Wii for now.

It's odd how I've started buying WB titles on Blu-ray instead of HD-DVD recently and now the studio's hinting at supporting Blu-ray exclusively. :D

Seriously though, it's hard to argue against Blu-ray lately. The extra 20GB per disc is big. Smallville Season 6 only needed 4 discs on the Blu-ray version vs. 5 discs for HD-DVD. Same with A Clockwork Orange fitting everything on 1 disc for Blu-ray whereas it needed 2 for HD-DVD. And rumor has it Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will have more extras on the Blu-ray version. It also allows WB to slap a PCM track on their Blu-ray releases instead of messing with Dolby TrueHD(although theoretically they're identical).

And the biggest advantage IMO. You can skip past the stupid FBI warning and WB logo on the PS3. The Toshiba HD-DVD players don't allow that. Couple that with the longer load time and you could be waiting up to 2 minutes before you can start playing the movie on HD-DVD vs. about 15 seconds on Blu-ray.

Ideally, Warner's decision would help get us in that direction (or it could have practically "killed" one of the formats...*glares at Paramount* ). It seems like they were going to support both and let us decide, but I guess they see that most people seem to want the studios (and other companies) to decide the format winner, and rightfully so. I'd tend to think that them backing Blu-ray would make things easier (backing HD DVD would probably make it 50/50, or maybe about the same as it is now in the reverse direction), but maybe HD DVD can do something really crazy this quarter. Not sure exactly how though.

There's a reason for that. The price gap may even be bigger if Warner backs Blu-ray. :)

And yeah, p*rn is on both formats, not that it really matters. I'm not even sure p*rn studios (along with other small, independent studios) are even interested in the HD formats at this point in time; both formats are probably too expensive for them to invest in, and probably not worth it given other options.

    Sorry to boom you Cola.

    http://gear.ign.com/articles/756/756148p1.html

At the AVNs last week, Joone, founder of Digital Playgrounds, one of the industry's most forward thinking production houses, told German site Heise that despite both his and other outlets interest in releasing features on Blu-ray, Sony has pressured Blu-ray disc manufacturers not to produce any media for p*rnography, threatening revocation of licenses for failure to comply. As such the adult entertainment industry has been essentially blocked from supporting the format and as a result has turned to HD-DVD.

    http://gear.ign.com/articles/759/759068p1.html

IGN Interview: Joone, Digital Playground Founder
New details on the Blu-ray p*rn ban, HD-DVD's support, and the future of adult entertainment.

IGN: So was the experience of replicating HD-DVD much easier?

Joone: Much easier. HD-DVD is producer friendly. You can use mostly the same manufacturing and maintain the same pricing. It's easier for everyone to get into it. For comparison, a Blu-ray disc comes in at about $2.50 replicated from a $5,000 glass-master. HD-DVDs cost about $1.10 and a $2,500 glass-master. For me to duplicate 1,000 pieces, one will cost $10,000 and the other will cost $5,000. For such a new format HD-DVD is much easier to get into.

I was on the verge of running right over to Circuit City and buying a Blu-ray player when an extremely tech savvy colleague stopped me. “Blu-ray is going to lose the battle,” he insists, “because the p*rn industry has just come out on the side of HD-DVD.”

The info in those (IGN) links is old, outdated, and maybe even inaccurate (didn't really bother to read every little detail).

Last I saw (back in August IIRC), I think a survey showed that disc production for both formats were about the same, with a slight edge to HD DVD.

Can someone kind of spell out the differences here? I remember hearing different complaints about each one; namely that Blu Ray is technically superior, but that HDDVD releases (at least early on) were actually heavier on the features/additions side.

    What is it like now?
