Not so, they say. Never happened. Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) were even caught on camera during the speech wearing “Who, me?” expressions of injured innocence. Unfortunately for them, we have the evidence, as does Biden. Cutting Social Security along with Medicare has been part of the Republican platform for decades. they often hide their intentions behind a scrim of impenetrable jargon, plainly hoping that Americans won’t do the necessary math to penetrate their subterfuge. Now we can turn to the specifics of Lee’s and Scott’s plans. In widely circulated videos from Lee’s first successful Senate campaign in 2010 he can be seen and heard stating as follows: “It will be my objective to phase out Social Security, to pull it out by the roots.” He said that was why he was running for the Senate, and added, “Medicare and Medicaid are of the same sort. They need to be pulled up.” As for Scott, his 12-point “Rescue America” plan, issued last year, included a proposal to sunset all federal legislation after five years. “If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again.” The implications for Social Security and Medicare, which were created by federal legislation, were unmistakable — so much so that the proposal made Republican officeholders’ skin crawl. When Republicans brayed during his speech that he was lying about it, he offered to make Scott’s manifesto available to anyone who called his office for it. At one of his subsequent appearances, a copy of Scott’s plan was placed on every seat.
I suspect the Republicans didn't raise a ruckus over this pre-midterms and opted to fatten up their donors because they planned to spring the "explosive spending debacle" around now. Biden just beat them to the punch while getting his infra, inflation and stim packages.
We know SOMEONE is gonna cut it. Eventually. Ponzi. I just hope the people with guns crying about protection against govt tyranny start shooting when it happens.
tinman too concerned with harry potter game to step in here. republican politician plan working as intended
https://www.marketwatch.com/amp/sto...-of-whats-causing-government-to-grow-addce22d Nikki Haley says Social Security is ‘the heart of what’s causing government to grow’ Tying together Medicaid and Medicare makes it painfully obvious Haley is in over her head. Two totally different programs for totally different groups with separate funding sources. One is administered federally and is insurance the other state by state, has no premiums and is welfare cash assistance pure and simple. Lumping it all together as entitlements is painfully ignorant. GOP is going to be roasted for this in 2024.
Also, Medicare recipients have high voter turnout and Medicaid recipients have lower turnout. I'd think a smart Republican would focus on demonizing Medicaid while making sure to placate all those voters on Medicare. Dumb to lump them together, but I guess I won't interrupt while they're making a mistake.
this warrants repeating Unlike a fraudulent secretive Ponzi scheme, Social Security's finances are transparent to the public, as required by law.
Would you replace it with anything, or would I be right to assume you think everyone should be providing for their own healthcare and retirement?
Of course not. Why would he. Who cares about society as a whole as long as there are less taxes. Funny how the whole "taxation is theft" crowd is fine with the government just doing away with Social Security and ACTUALLY STEALING the money we've all paid into it over the years.
Potentially you could have some sort of mandatory pension program at the state level to replace social security. It would be based on your own money being held in trust and you could invest it in something with a better rate of return than what you get from social security. Medicare would be replaced by the regular insurance system that everyone under 65 uses. You would phase it out over time, so the people who already "paid in", (which is to say, were taxed to pay for someone else's retirement) would still get a return based on how long they were forced to participate in the system. You can't just screw the people that were already stolen from, but you can stop stealing from new people to keep the thing going.
You would need some sort of pool for all of these people who are no longer getting insurance from a job. (Similar to Obamacare) However unlike Obamacare this pool is now made up of the most expensive patients in the country the elderly. Thus no private insurer would provide the coverage without massive premiums, deductibles, coinsurance/copays making it unaffordable for the patients. Without significant government subsidy healthcare for the elderly is a complete non starter. No one wants to say death panels but that’s the other alternative. You want the Libertarian wet dream of everyone just takes care of themselves well ok. Roll back EMTALA and make healthcare for the elderly the responsibility of each individual. If they need cancer treatment or bypass surgery they can hit up their church, do a go fund me or just die at home.
once again, you're publicizing your willful ignorance. The Social Security trust funds hold money not needed in the current year to pay benefits and administrative costs and, by law, invest it in special Treasury bonds that are guaranteed by the U.S. Government.
It's amazing how much utter bullshit he posts on these boards. It's impossible to call him out on anything. Hell just pivot and claim you're lying and change the subject.
I'm pretty sure he wouldn't survive in his libertarian world. People on this country are way too ****ing entitled to realize how ****ing good we really have it here. So so good. We obviously need to continue to make things better (medicare for all, paternity/maternity leave benefits, better benefits for our working class, etc etc) but our system, as inefficient as government can be, really does benefit our society from the greedy grips of all out capitalism would provide.
