http://blog.chron.com/houstonpolitics/2011/07/city-turns-red-light-cameras-back-on/ Just great, I live within a quarter mile of 3 of these damn things, 2 of which are located on streets that I almost have to take every day to get into and out of my home. umad?
No kidding. What baffoon thought it was feasible to put a stipulation in the city charter that all referendums must be held within 30 days of the passage of an ordinance in order to overturn it? That pretty much makes it impossible to reverse/overturn/get rid of any bad legislation.
Enjoy your last term as Mayor, Porker...I mean, Parker. Why do we even vote anymore? They do what they want all in the name of greed anyways. Lol, I'm sure this is very high on her agenda.
I don't get it. People (in general) complain about the city being in debt, yet they don't want to raise taxes, don't want to really cut spending and in this case, don't want to bring in additional revenue. Just don't run a red light. How hard is that? Doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
i can accept that this is a money grab and nothing to do with safety. but if the people voted against it, it should stand. i'm sure Parker will fight very hard to "honor our will".
I've never complained about the city being in debt. And... I never run red lights, either... but (and this is where people like you really annoy me).... YOU DON'T SEE THE BIG PICTURE AND PRINCIPLE of this.... ...this is the very first stage of granting our gov't the ability to use automated processes to monitor and police the public. If we don't stop it NOW we will more rapidly approach an Orwellian society where Big Brother is watching your every move.. You can't put the genie back in the bottle.
I don't have a problem with the cameras. I think it's pretty ****ty that "Houston voters approved a referendum to turn off the cameras in November, but a federal judge ruled last month that it had been improperly placed on the ballot, rendering the results invalid." Everyone who voted wasted their time. I guess they assumed not enough people would show up to vote against the cameras, but they did.
If you want to reduce city debt, find a way to do it that does not demand that I hand over law enforcement to a virtually unaccountable for-profit company charging absurd fees via a back-room deal with the city.
But then where would I get in my high-horse comments against you and your band of law breaking, beneath-me red light runners?? j/k I agree with you completely.
......I haven't been back home in Houston in years, but really? Is this the main argument against something that I'll admit makes a lot of sense, as encouraging people to not run red lights is a good thing. I mean, come on, there's a pretty gap between having a camera to watch cars on the road and a TV you can't turn off in your house.
