Let's cut this conversation in half. For the purposes of this forum (Rockets 2000), the question is whether the Rockets are becoming the same old inside-out team. My answer: Slashing guards? Perimeter picks? What are you smoking? The fault does not lie with your set. Those of you who want to discuss whether threads about white guys and Republicans are racist, please go start a thread in the BBS Hangout or Clutchcity.net Feedback forum. My two cents: Racism is context-dependent. A joke about using white players to win Republican votes is a joke about racism, not a racist joke. It's stupid, false, and slanderous, but it's not racist.
To create the "spacing inside" for the guards (Francis, SA and Cat), the Rockets need for the other players to provide a credible threat 15' and more from the basket. KT could do it in streaks, but not regularly. Bull can, but injuries and average athletic ability impede his upside. Carlos, 15' and in. Cato, 15' and in. Pig Miller, 15' and in. Dream could do it, but just doing a curtain call this season. Walt can but Langi will be doing the same thing for a 2nd round contract versus the millions that the Wiz gets. Will Langhi be a worse defender than Walt? Doubtful. Will Langhi be able to score off the open looks that Walt got this past season? Probably so, maybe better. Will Langhi be more cap friendly if the Rockets need to do something to create space for a Free Agent in 2001? For sure. OK Collier has long ball range (reportedly NBA 3 point line). He is a 7' 260 lb PF/C. The Rocket have never had somebody like that on their roster. Suppose they have a 2nd unit on the floor of Cat Mooch Langhi Collier Carlos or Pig Carlos or Pig hangs around the basket for the drive-n-dish plays. Langhi and Collier are outside setting picks and waiting for the toss back if the lane is too crowded when Mooch and Cat penetrate. If Rudy can get a servicable 15 minutes a game from a combination similar to the above, they will have done some extraordinary wheeling and dealing. Pig signed as free agent. Mooch signed from CBA Carlos probably has minimal trade value Cat second round pick Langhi second round pick Collier mid-first round pick and questioned by many on this BBS Collier might or might not be here. Maybe it is Langhi that is gone. Suppose Collier is involved in a trade for Austin in a sign-n-trade. Austin can shoot a long ball and the concept of creating spacing inside still holds. Since the title of thread has been modified from what I objected to, my original response can no longer be understood by those who came in late to this thread. I took the liberty of deleting my response to the original thread title and to those that replied to me. If the original thread title was intended to be a joke, my apologies for over-reacting. I saw nothing to indicate that it was intended to be a joke. As far as the content of hetero's post is concerned, I'd say it's a bit early to panic and assume that the Rockets are reverting to inside-out offense of the last several years. None of the players the Rockets have acquired or are attemping require at this point have the post game or passing skills required to make such an offense work. (Unless of course, Dream returns to his form of the championship years which would be nothing short of miraculous) I think the more likely philosophy behind the players the Rockets are acquiring can be summed up in three words.
